    Management is awful

    Restaurant Server (Current Employee)

ProsGood job if you don't mind working weekends. Money is pretty good and some of the customers and employees (not managers) are fun to be around. Good job if you want to break into the casino industry and get started.

ConsThe managers are terrible. The managers nit pick and micro manage but always miss the big picture. The managers are some of the biggest hypocrites you will ever encounter. They talk to you with no respect and treat you like a child (or worse) and then wonder why no one wants to work for them. My manager would often complain about how long it would take her to make a schedule because no one wanted to work for her. Hello! Maybe you are the problem? They are also very hypocritical and will give you into trouble for things they often (and openly) do themselves. They are also really good at shoving people under the bus to make themselves appear squeaky clean and will deny responsibility for any wrong doings to save themselves. They are only concerned about their career, not the company. Sexual harassment does exist at this location.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider treating employees like people instead of children. We all all adults here. Also it wouldn't hurt to practice what you preach.

    The blind leading the blind

    Restaurant Server (Former Employee)

ProsNone. I cannot think of any pros.

ConsManagement is clueless. They treated employees horribly and on top of that they didn't even know what they were doing. Ameristar had the worst managers I've ever worked for.

Ameristar Kansas City is an awful place to work

Casino Dealer (Former Employee) Kansas City, MO (US)

ProsHmm.....I'll get back to you on that.

ConsThe clientele is the bottom of the barrel, period. Some of the customers pretend to have class but they just don't. This reflects heavily on how they treat the employees.
The managers are awful. Ameristar Kansas City has the worst management I've ever encountered. They regularly throw the book at certain employees while encouraging other employees to openly and freely do the exact same thing. There is an unbelievable amount of favoritism at Ameristar Kansas City. Morale is very low. Corporate really needs to clean house when it comes management at the Kansas City location, from top to bottom. Managers are too hateful towards certain employees for personal reasons.
Both the customers and management show little respect for anyone, not even themselves. Avoid this place at all costs. Upper management talks a lot about making it a fun place to work but it just isn't. There are much better places to work.

Advice to Senior ManagementI guess it is hard to respect others when you do not even respect yourselves.

Horrible how you are treated as an employee

Players Club Representative (Former Employee) Kansas City, MO (US)

ProsI met some great friends while working there. It was within close proximity to my house. The pay was good for my job.

ConsI was terminated from Ameristar Casino Kansas City exactly one month after reporting my manager to human resources for him repeatedly making inappropriate comments to me about other employees and customers. He would often make derogatory comments about people's weight, age, bodily features, and personal lives in front of other employees and customers and think it was funny. I told him to stop on more than one occasion and it only got worse. When I reported him to human resources I was told I would remain anonymous which was a big fat lie because the next day he confronted me and told me he knew I was the one who turned him in and he would find a way to fire me. Well one month later he retaliated and I was fired for something very silly that everyone else does but is still working there. All I can say is I've never worked in such an unprofessional environment in my life. I was the only employee brave enough to turn him in which I believed was doing the right thing. None of the other employees would turn him in because they were too scared for their jobs so they had to put up with his harassing and inappropriate comments on a daily basis. Management at Ameristar Kansas City is very retaliatory, vindictive and overall unprofessional. The funny part is when they were firing me they had the nerve to read off their core values. One was "Do the right thing." Since when is harassing employees and making inappropriate comments about people's weight, age, personal lives, and bodily features on a regular basis doing "the right thing"? They claim to have an open door policy but reporting any problems will only get you into trouble even if your manager is harassing you and others. I truly feel sorry for the hourly employees who still work there.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart respecting your employees. Also you never know when you will be without a job.

A lot of favoritism at Ameristar

Cook1 (Former Employee) Kansas City, MO (US)

ProsThe team member dining room. Health insurance was also great if you qualify however I did not.

ConsThere was a lot of favoritism at Ameristar Kansas City. It was very much a political environment. The managers tended to play favorites quite a bit. Certain employees got away with things regularly that others did not. The employee of the month thing was laughable. It was clearly not based on the hardest working nor friendliest employees but rather on who was friendly with the boss. It was also a very much a "do as I say not as I do" type of environment. No wonder morale was so low.

    Advice to Senior ManagementGood luck

Terrible how you are treated as an employee

House Person (Former Employee) Council Bluffs, IA (US)

ProsLunch was $2.50 in the Hot line and Free for the salad bar along with free pop, milk, and juice. Starting pay was good but only a 3% raise (you have to wait a year for one).

ConsWhere do I start? I've been harassed by other employees during my light duty after I injured my back on the job. (I actually had one cussing and yelling that she wished she can "Sit on her ass for 8 hours a day, do nothing, and still get paid!" Directed towards me of course.) Went to my supervisor and hotel director and they had a little talk with the employee, but her high and almighty attitude towards me did not change.

The Point system is awful! If you're a second late, it;s a half point. If your dog passed away, they don't care, it's a point, sometimes a point and a half if you don't call in two hours ahead. It takes a year to get 1 point back and you only get 9 of them a year, so if you make it up to 8.5 and your late one more time, you're done.

And now to the most important part: Why I came here to write this. They don't care if you have EMERGENCY SURGERY!!! They will come up with some excuse as to why they can't grant you personal leave (30 days unpaid, but hey you still have a job!) after you don't qualify for FMLA (you have to be there for a year, I worked there for 8 months), and they will give you a line of bull and tell you to come in and sign a VOLUNTARY form of resignation so you can "be considered rehire-able in the future."

Funny, I get injured on the job and two months later they can't accommodate me after surgery...

Anyways, the management team is condescending towards you if you come to them with a problem. They will give you coachings left and right (at first good to make it seem like youre the best employee ever) and will write you up for the most stupid reasons. (I made the mistake of stacking two tiny boxes on top of each other and I didn't bend right, in front of my supervisor, who also wrote me up for being too slow in productivity my 2nd day back from light duty...Advice: Watch your back!)

Used to be good, now it is awful.

Blackjack Dealer (Current Employee) Black Hawk, CO (US)

ProsAs a dealer, the tips are the best in town, although going down because of the addition of a bunch of tables and progressive carnival games.

ConsMany. The management here has become some of the most incompetent, punishing and retaliatory I have ever worked with. Although they claim they have an open door policy here it has become clear to employees that expressing concerns will only get you into trouble. Lying to employees is a specialty here. They have a set of values they shove down employees throats but don't follow themselves.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave a real open door policy. Start caring about employees. Show some appreciation to employees. Follow you values.

    Bullying does exist here

Server (Former Employee) Kansas City, MO (US)

ProsMost coworkers were great to work with, pay was good in certain departments/job titles depending on your position, was within close proximity to where I used to live and go to school, casino industry in general is fast paced and you stay busy.

ConsHarassment does exist here. Bullying and harassment from customers directed at employees is very bad at the kansas city location and management allows it to happen regularly. There is also harassment coming from management towards hourly employees. If you ignore it, it gets worse but standing your ground proves difficult. Overall very hostile work environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart respecting your employees and do something about the abusive guests who ruin it for everyone. Please start treating employees with the respect and dignity they deserve. They work hard and want to see things go well.

Don't work here unless you are desperate

Sous Chef (Former Employee) Kansas City, MO (US)

ProsIt was a stable job when I first moved to Kansas City. The pay was not bad and the employees were friendly and fun to work with.

ConsTerrible customers who are very rude. The worst I've experienced really. A lot of angry customers with drinking, drug and gambling problems who are abusive towards staff. Management does little about this and does not respect its employees. Management makes their employees wait on drunk obnoxious belligerent people on a regular basis because they put their money in a slot machine so that makes it ok. A joke of an environment really. If you want to make any money you must work nights and weekends so don't expect to have any sort of a life while working here. Rigid/impossible points system is practiced unless you are Vietnamese or Haitian. Luckily I found another job after a year and quit. I'm so glad.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo something about the drunk/abusive customers instead of ignoring it.
