Good pay, no much deal flow, too political and no diversity

Director (Former Employee)

I worked at Barclays full-time for more than 5 years

ProsInteresting assignments
Smart people
Nice offices

ConsBad place for women with families
Too much politics
No client focus but rather internal promotion
Values face time at the office
Lack of balance sheet to support clients

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Disorganised, Political and Cheapo

Assistant Vice President IT (Current Employee)
Singapore (Singapore)

I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than a year

ProsStill a good brand name

Cons1. They can initially offer decent base salary to attract you but thats it. Bonus, raise and benefit are worst I have seen. Cost cutting can be extreme. So better negotiate your base hard enough before joining to make up for the rest.
2. Highly political organisation with no meritocracy.
3. On technology side, quality of people is generally not good, esp. for an investment bank
4. On technology side, work is very messy and disorganised. Most production systems have been done in most quick and dirty fashion I have ever seen. All that legacy is very difficult to live with but also very difficult to change now. But yes there are few teams which are exception. So its best to get a clear picture work-wise like before joining the organisation.

Forced to sell insurance and current accounts with fee paying packs

Personal Banker (Current Employee)
London, England (UK)

I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than 5 years

ProsLove to genuinely help general public meet their needs and requirements to make there life easy. Working and waiting for a gap to leave the branch or maybe even the company. Local job.

ConsRogue managers who want us to sell and reach targets (which are not supposed to exist under the Financial Conduct Authority) as prior to them being enforced. We ARE penalised on our PD and 1 to 1 interviews if we do not achieve our previous records. We can not use words like "Sale" or "Advice". We are encouraged to talk about the icaps on gateway even though customer does not start the conversation. we are also measured on these petty things. Anything to make life difficult so that we resign. Transfers are very rarely given to help staff in work/life balance unless you are management. They want you to leave so that Barclays don't have to give you redundancy in the near future. They have already tightened on paying of over time. DAILY we have to give them more than 40 minutes in overtime we can not claim - 20 minutes in the morning to attend daily meeting and can only claim overtime in the afternoon AFTER the first 20 minutes have been done free of charge. Too much pressure to "SELL". "SELL" and "SELL" even when this obviously does NOT meet the customers needs or requirement. Too much immoral money coming in. Now new overdraft charges have for the needy have actually increased. We have to lie to the most obviously losing out person that it's better for them. People are already leaving Barclays or now not using us as their main bank. Managers also too secret - don't trust us PB or other staff. Career opportunities and moves are NOT that easy really. The bad/trouble making staff tend to be able to move and even get promotions.

Advice to Senior ManagementAbide by the FCA guideline and ease off on the pressure to "SELL". Get the public (and staff) confidence back.
We all know Barclays needs the money - but so do their staff. We are humans and have a need for work/life balance. We are not third world call centre workers. Our outgoings are higher. Be brave, handle your staff fairly and equally. Don't pick on soft target only to set them as an example - that's a form of bullying. People don't speak out against you because you gang up and make life more difficult for us.

Management does not care about work life balance and your career is determined by managers' internal politics

Vice President (Current Employee)
New York, NY (US)

I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than 3 years

ProsCan provide a decent (not great) learning platform

Consincumbent people, politics, blatant disregard of anyone below management and low pay despite tough working conditions

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease try to be more aware of how things are managed and employees paid below the MD level

Not good

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Barclays

ProsIt is better to work for Barclays overseas, rather than in India. In US/UK, the company has a decent brand name, and benefits from a strong local leadership team in the major geographies that it operates in. Conservative in its market posturing, it is doing reasonably well from a financial and strategy points of view.

ConsIn India, the main issue for Barclays is terrible leadership. Lack of transparency, ethics, professionalism. Performance appraisal is simply an eye-wash. Ratings and bonus are not determined by (a) the quality of work you do (b) the value you have generated for the company, but by other factors (read nepotism, cronyism, bias). HR best practices and leadership best practices are routinely flouted, because you can get away with the same. There is a tremendous culture of change resistance, innovation simply cannot happen because it will either be stalled because of vested interests, or, because leadership support will not be there. Strategy and management changes too frequently. Inadequate technical training for high end, high skill jobs.

Pathetic

Collector (Current Employee)
Manchester, England (UK)

I have been working at Barclays part-time for less than a year

ProsSome great people.
Good pay initially but limited opportunities for bonus.
Some excellent managers and colleagues, overshadowed by incompetence elsewhere.

ConsDisorganised, disintegrated, disempowered...
Treated as just another payroll number.
Supposedly cost-conscious but hugely wasteful organisation.
Continual communication about 'business change, values' etc with lack of input and ownership by all levels of management.
Top down approach results in demotivated colleagues.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on getting the basics right.

Initially it was excellent but you soon realise you are just a number and their 'values' count for nothing. T

Director (Current Employee)
London, England (UK)

I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGreat people in the Branches and they really want to help customers. They are trying hard under extremely difficult circumstances. They are being replaced by machine's and having to work harder each day. It was a great environment but slowly that is eroding.

ConsSenior Management have no concern for the actual people and they think they can do whatever they like. They consistently want staff to work longer and longer under extreme circumstances. Retail Banking is a dying industry and Branches will be closing even though they have denied it to the media.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to really look at your 'Values' and decide whether you are living by them. To often if you have an option they definitely goes against you. You need to a be a 'yes' person and do as you are told.

On-going redundancies at Barclays seriously affecting morale

Assistant Vice President (Former Employee)
Singapore (Singapore)

I worked at Barclays full-time for more than 3 years

ProsPeople at the firm are generally cooperative and helpful.

ConsNo job security due to current focus on cutting costs and shifting staff headcounts to offshore centers.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to better manage budgets and costs without excessive job cuts. Offshoring has its limits will directly affect the company's reputation and overall competitiveness.

Average

Vice President (Current Employee)

I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than a year

ProsLess demanding and Generous leave policy (30 annual leaves + sick leave). People agenda, Recommend for people looking for retired lifestyle

ConsLow on values and talent. Lack of responsibility flows from the top. Projects get delayed every time and no one is responsible. Slow paced. Frequent changes at management level which reflects in regular changes to vision and strategy. This is not the place for ambitious people it could be very frustrating. Terrible work culture and no openness to learn from other banks. Too much importance for people agenda

Advice to Senior ManagementTake initiative, have clear vision and strategy, lead from the front, recognize talent and give importance to genuine contribution, veterans suck
