    Pros

The DIFC location is good enough and there is little (productive) work and that is about all there is to it.

    Cons

As far as wealth, investments and overall business is concerned, this place is nearly finished. There is absolutely no focus and the work environment is as unprofessional as it can get. The support functions like admin, communications, events, etc. are full of incompetent people who do not know a word of Arabic and draw hefty salaries and generally waste their own and everyone else’s time playing dirty politics and justifying their crazy salaries. Bulk of the top management like John, Richard, and all the great guys have already moved on. UK management has no time to look into what’s going on here and the communication coming across to us is miserable and a total sham. Most people are just waiting to get the next best offer and jump ship and no one really belongs or has any clear idea of what’s going on. We are headed for a big disaster here.

    Advice to Management

Focus on your core business. Do a person to person salary versus business contribution analysis! Look at the salaries, qualifications, contribution and ethics of people in the other indirect/support functions who are weighing us down and dragging us behind. There are rumor mills running aplenty and they are being created to protect certain individuals and teams. The messages and indications we are getting are not good. At this rate there will be nothing left. This is not the way things were a few years ago. Ask yourself why your most competent people are leaving / have left already and the most incompetent staying back? Focus on competent employment / retention to help build a better business, better business relations and people communications.

    Pros

The company offers free coffee and tea. Colleagues are cooperative in general. Manager is hardworking as the staff. The CEO seems to want right ship and create a moral atmosphere after some scandals.

    Cons

The company is struggling to keep talent because of multiple rounds of layoffs. Managers have a tough time choosing who to get rid of. They sometimes make the unsavory choices based on favoritism. The manager treated his employees with decency only when pressuring them to deliver projects and did not give credit where credit was due after the projects were delivered successfully. The bank's pay is below average compared to other banks in the i-bank business, to put it generously.

    Advice to Management

Try your best to keep the talent. Fairness and decency are basic values that any company must follow to achieve success.

    Pros

    Very accommodating of work-life balance

    Cons

The firm just cannot get out of its own way. You have decisions being made by retail bankers in the UK, impacting the investment bank world wide.

    Advice to Management

Decide if you want to be in the business of investment banking.

    Pros

Barclays definitely hire a 'type' for the branches- bubbly, friendly etc so you always find someone you can get along with

    Cons

The self service machines have made a cashier's life hell. One till for ALL business customers and transactions over 750.00 is a joke. I worked in a self service bench for 5 days before handing in my notice. Customers (rightly) hate the new style and therefore set about making a cashiers life hell because they're miserable.
Also- giving cashiers a 4% max pay rise for this is laughable. I'm going to a job which will increase my salary by 20%, better hours and paid overtime.
Overtime-a paid working day in Barclays is 9-5 with 1 hour lunch.Fine on paper but you are required to be at branch by 8.30am latest and are never paid overtime despite rarely leaving before 5.30PM.

    Advice to Management

Pay your cashiers a living wage and don't patronise them by using a fancy job title. Try spending a 9 hour day on a till in a self service branch and smiling at closing time. Please reconsider the 1 till per branch rule, it is beyond realistic!

  10. An environment that is stuck to convention - junior Director level utterly resistant to change and improvement.

    Pros

Compensation is ok and some of the senior management are extremely good.

    Cons

What senior executives want to achieve and change, is halted by a bureaucratic layer of institutional lethargy and denial. The junior Director level is overpopulated with individuals who are simply hanging on for a pension. The Bank is constantly trying to change and evolve, but is continually dragged back by dinosaurs who don't like to be held to account - the culture remains: 'bowler hats and typewriters'.

    Advice to Management

Clear out the middle (B7) level and nurture talent. Create an environment where ideas and initiative are embraced rather than actively suppressed. Regional capability needs to be brought into the centre with more collaboration - its no wonder certain BUs are so militant and separatist! I had the opportunity to progress in the bank but left as my spirit was being crushed. The RBB cluster's reputation for churn is well known, and people who have conformed in that environment struggle when they leave..
