    Cenovus

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Cenovus full-time

    Pros

Challenging work and industry standard compensation

    Cons

Poor Leadership, lots of poster talk from upper management that doesn't translate to the working level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Flatten and focus the organisation. We produce oil not youtube videos.

I have been working at Cenovus full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Any "pros" that existed have been eliminated or removed from this organization.

    Cons

My manager could not lead his way out of a wet paper bag. Who needs a manager who slaps his head, pulls at his hair, rocks back and forth and plugs his ears when your having business discussions? (True story)!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps consider cranial MRI's for group leads and managers before appointing them into stretch roles .A leader’s job is to align the organization around a clear and achievable vision. This cannot occur when the blind lead the blind.

I worked at Cenovus as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

    Fridays Off
    Contract Pay was indsutry standard
    Enjoyed work

    Cons

Contract was terminated with no warning - 5 of us across the division were let go all at once
Manner and handling of termination very abrupt, disrespectful and degrading to contract employee
Lack of leadership to very poor leadership at all levels
Lack of trust and respect in leaders - feeling was they say one thing and do another

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your contract employees with more respect. We contribute as much if not more than "permanent employees".

I have been working at Cenovus as a contractor for more than 5 years

    Pros

First and Third Fridays off. Good location, can be flexible work hours. Great commercials.

    Cons

Too political - everything is based on pretense and relationships. Hidden agendas galore and people who are good putting on a facade are typically the ones that get praised while the "real" people do the work.
    No leadership skills for management
Unfair treatment to contractors - contractors treated like second class citizens. Why bother hiring anyone as a contractor if they're not given respect/access/permissions to do work but are expected to deliver the same amount of work as employees. Alot of contractors and service providers aren't even shown on the org chart and are "hidden".
    Massive workload with unreasonable deadlines/expectations.
Very low morale - everyone is working out of fear of job loss.
    Too much water-cooler whispering.
Feels like a factory run by machines - no heart
Messages from leadership regarding Cenovus culture are empty words - the Cenovus culture is almost opposite of what they portray it to be. Huge disconnect between Leadership and the actual goings-on in the company. The culture at EnCana before the split was better than what it is today.

    ....Cenovus "in a nutshell"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know your employees AND contractors - be transparent.
Put more value on the people - they are the ones doing the work. Its not all about the numbers and its not "fluff". The people produce the numbers. Contractor satisfaction is very low.

I worked at Cenovus as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Pays well! Oil and gas always pays great money.

    Cons

Prepare to spend your days doing the kind of soul crushing, boring, out of date, factory coding. A 'new project' is something you dream of like the desert dreams of rain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None. I can't imagine how you could tell management how to improve.

I have been working at Cenovus full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Comparable pay and benefits with its peers.

    Cons

Top heavy management with no leadership. Managers and VP's from other organizations parachuted in as "axe men" lends itself to a toxic workplace, everyone in my department is on edge waiting for the other shoe to drop. Hidden agendas, lack of clarity, and extremely poor leadership makes for a lot of head scratching. Oh and by the way, the good - ol' boys club is very alive and well at Cenovus. If your not a member your in for some tough slugging.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back to business basics!!! Bringing in cast offs from other super majors in VP roles will not fix your business model. As the saying goes, if you want to know how your business is doing, get out on the floor, the employees will tell you how things are!

I worked at Cenovus full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Yes the money, benefits and 2 Friday's off per month.

    Cons

Too many mangers (no leaders what-so-ever) for each project/department, no one takes responsibility for anything - just finger pointing, lack of management expertise, I never met the group leader even once in the three + years that I was there - we were even on the same floor...how crazy is that!

Very little if any for career advancement, will pay for education but nothing with any substance, made many of my colleagues cry almost on a daily basis and one of them would toss their cookies in the washroom.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Money is not everything, especially if the environment is toxic.

My advice, it sounds all good especially from folks who worked there for a year or less, however, give it time to sink-in and then the truth will all come out. Trust me when I say you will not last more than 2-3 years at this company.

    Pros

good pay that can be to little for the amount of work required. Not a bad work life balance though not in season.

    Cons

I have been working at Cenovus

    Pros

Vacation policy and 1st and 3rd Fridays off
Involved in some very interesting projects
One of the largest Producers which makes them the big player

    Cons

No room for advancement in the company - too many older people (because of the great vacation policy) that will not leave.
Too many people are put into positions that they have no business being in (not enough knowledge or oil background). As a result, senior people are expected to do far too much training because so many people are in positions they should be in.
Senior management and executive team is mostly clueless with regard to the oil industry (mostly ex-gas people from EnCana with no idea about oil.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Newflash: You are now an Oil company! Stop taking incompetent gas people and putting them into oil jobs that require experience and knowledge.
