Advice to Senior ManagementCompensation should be attractive esp. when expectation is that employees have to work hard

Workload varies a lot from team to team

Advanced Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Taipei (Taiwan)

I worked at Garmin full-time for more than 3 years

Pros1. Most people are friendly.
2. International team work.

Cons1. Pay is low
2. Depends on team. May need to work overtime very often but there is little compensation and reward.
3. Factory-style workplace. Boss in Taiwan is mainly reponsibile for production, not R&D. He tends to focus on cost reduction. Your benefits may be sacrificed.
4. Need to go to office by 8am. Earlier than the average in this industry.
5. Higher-ups hope you to learn and do everything.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed a building for R&D employees. Arrange workload equally. Pay more .

Good first job for a college grad, build your resume and leave

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Olathe, KS (US)

I worked at Garmin full-time for more than 5 years

ProsInteresting products, friendly people, comfortable place to live and work

ConsManagement has a product roadmap but no technology roadmap. The software teams are forced to use outdated tools and practices because the products use a proprietary operating system that is outdated and needs to be deprecated. Pay is not competitive with the market. Lots of top performers have left the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote leaders that understand modern software practices and technology. Ditch the old ways and start making products that can compete in the post smart phone world. Make retention a top priority.

Great place to start your career but not for those seeking to grow old with a company.

ERP Applications Analyst (Former Employee)
Olathe, KS (US)

I worked at Garmin full-time for more than 5 years

ProsLearning experience, people, benefits, exposure to technology

ConsSalary, compensation, growth opportunities, feeling under valued, lack of empowerment

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have lost a lot of good talent lately.. executives should get feedback from the lowest levels to fix this.
It would help immensely if all employees were made to feel valued and empowered.
Some managers have gotten very autocratic, some indifferent and incompetent and that needs to be fixed.
With the CYA attitude, innovative out of the box thinking is discouraged which is not good for a growing company.

Do Not Work at the Call Center to Try to Get Your Foot in the Door

Product Support Specialist (Current Employee)
Olathe, KS (US)

I have been working at Garmin full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGarmin is a great place to work as a company. They have great benefits, an awesome Winter Ball, and take the company to World's of Fun once a year. Besides a lower salary, the company does try to take care of its employees.

Cons-Micromanaged if you are under the attendance policy
-Very difficult to get out of the call center to persue other jobs
-Very slow in promotion
-Salary is OK

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of the attendance policy. It causes unneeded stress.

Good learning experience, started out well but ended with an anti-climax

IT Analyst (Former Employee)

I worked at Garmin full-time

ProsRelative autonomy vs micro managment, casual working environment, good benefits, interesting projects

ConsLittle recognition for overtime hours, no work from home alternatives even with bad weather conditions, poor work-life balance

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to what goes on with individual associates, try to balance attention to all contributors and not just favorites, start providing work from home opportunities

– I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
