I worked at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Best benefits in all of the medical center.

    Cons

The emphasis on prestige through research has tripled the patient load which in turn has overworked and exhausted staff...almost to the point of costly mistakes. There's a reason MD Anderson is no longer #1. The turnover rate in most departments is ridiculous. Newly hired employees are left to fend for themselves without proper training. The 2-3% raise rates are laughable (maybe $20 extra a pay period), especially since most parking has increased by almost $50. The performance based bonus is a set-up for failure since more and more patients are unhappy with the care they're receiving. Morale is low and the pressure to perform on little support from management is high. Growth within the company is non-existent unless you're "in" with management. In the past 2 years alone, a number of prestigious executives and physicians have left the institution, some with little warning. Cutting costs comes in the form of not hiring qualified management down to supplies. Don't count on HR for help as the buddy system rules and cries for help have already been ignored.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overhaul HR and fix the obvious signs of failure.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The experienced and knowledge that you acquire are top notch. Insurance is very good.

    Cons

Very low pay. Management makes you jump through hoops to give you pennies. They feel that you being employed by MD is good enough. In order to make more money you would have to leave then come back, which is ridiculous. The only reason most people stay is because they are up in age and are in their comfort zone and have been there over 15 yrs. Diagnostic Imaging has a huge turnover. The technologist are getting tired of all the BS.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The prestige of working at MD is not the only thing people need in life, they need good salaries.

I worked at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Salary and Benefits. Many excellent treatment opportunities for patients.

    Cons

In the 18 years I worked at MDA before successfully retiring with excellent retirement benefits, I witnessed massive financial waste, nepotism, bullying, sexual harassment, religious and racial prejudice, and retaliation for reporting compliance violations. Additionally, the administration has been historically very poor with HR ignoring many complaints. Nepotism is rampant and there are the many inappropriate public displays of affection between employees including attending physicians who openly solicit personal relationships with other physicians as well as employees working under them including vulnerable new fellows who rely on these attending physicians for good reviews and future employment. I witnessed many examples of inappropriate public displays of affection as well as bullying and sexual harassment. I also witnessed compliance violations that, when they were reported, resulted in retaliation against the employee reporting the violation. I watched management in quite a few departments frequently abuse, bully, and harass excellent employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The administration needs to implement and not just give lip service to MD Anderson policies of zero tolerance for bullying, sexual harassment, religious/racial prejudice, and retaliation for reporting compliance violations The financial waste needs to be corrected before the institution has to close its doors.

I worked at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

MD Anderson has some amazing employees. There are truly wonderful scientists, nurses and staff that give there all to the patients. However, these same people are overworked, under appreciated and subjected to hostile work environments.
The pay is more than most institutions, but you also work more hours and often on the weekends. I had virtually no work/life balance.

    Cons

MD Anderson is now just a business with a goal to make the most money possible. Patient care is secondary to the almighty dollar. Many department heads and senior management have no management skills. A hostile work environment could not even begin to describe what I was subjected to. Our department head's way of managing her staff was more than just unprofessional it was abusive. Many faculty at MD Anderson have left the institution already or are in the process of leaving.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They put the salary on their website, which is rare. Most companies don't do that. Also, the health benefits are pretty good, and it's pretty good job security.

    Cons

Horrible work/life balance. Very hard to schedule off and LOTS of rules and red tape with employees. They treat you like a number and there's a lot of gossip, politics, and they will overwork you. All in all, there are a lot of other hospitals I would recommend to work for that treat their employees way better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually listen to your employees. If they're happy, they will work harder. If you ignore their concerns or don't give them promotions/raises after years of dedicated service, it will show in their work. Offer more work/life balance and scheduling off should be way easier. Do NOT LET EMPLOYEES COME TO WORK SICK!
