I worked at Microsoft (less than a year)

    Pros

Diverse and interesting employees, collaborative environment, novel research projects, freedom to pursue research goals.

    Cons

Long hours, insufficient access to healthy food, older office cubicle environment, several layers of bureaucracy, confusing travel and research expense reimbursement,.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Closer management of project and a more in-depth understanding of employees' work would yield results faster.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

They spoil their interns like crazy -- talks from management, parties, social gatherings, alumni events for your school, gifts, food, etc.

    Cons

Very hierarchical, with a lot of focus on the chain of command and promotion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are folks who thrive more on being encouraged to be their best than on being encouraged to fit HR's promotion guidelines, even if those folks are encouraged to be their best in those areas. It's about rephrasing conversations about success.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

You'll find the best people working around yourself, which is the biggest motivation. Though it depends on team, in general people are given authority to take decisions. Recreational area is good, which includes TT, foosball, chess tables, and x-box with kinect. People are co-operative, help you learn.

    Cons

Though they have many projects going on, the pace of work is average. This is not to say that you won't get a lot of work, its that you won't see your deliverables go live for a long time. There are good things to learn, but not many new things to learn. You can get similar opportunities at other places too.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing the good work. Try to pull some more important stuff to India office.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Great team, great working environment, very interesting project. Really felt like I got a taste of what it meant to work at Microsoft. 10/10 would return.

    Cons

To be honest- not really any big cons. The only thing is that I wish they had free food, although that is stretching it.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Smart people all over the place. Highly used products.

    Cons

The experience is hit or miss depending on what team you are placed on and what they have you work on. 12 weeks is not a lot of time to do anything too important. But it is enough time to determine if your team is a good match for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

MS has a lot of respect for their interns and new hires. It's a great company.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

The people at Microsoft Research are fantastic, world-class researchers. My experience in the Cambridge research lab completely changed my graduate studies. I learned about a new field. I learned how to do engineering for that field. I made what I hope are lifelong friendships and collaborations. It was truly a fantastic experience.

    Cons

The intern seating is ridiculously lacking. I cannot believe there are not more intern desks. Interns should be seated near peers who are working on similar problems and should be seated near their mentors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the research pure. Microsoft is one of the only companies remaining that is still invested in pure science that does not have to be applied to a product immediately. Don't let this die.
