Be careful of the reviews - it depends on your job in the Company

Human Resources (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA (US)

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 5 years

ProsLocation is good and remote areas are good to have closer to home.

ConsThe benefits have changed this year - expesive deductibles on medical and no longer a pension plan. Very stressed out mid-management that jumps the whims of change. There are "reoganization" lay-offs in management, but not at the lower level jobs. These are mostly in the Electric field and a few years ago, this was 150 people in the IT Department. Beware of this and ask around about past and future "reoganizations" disguised at layoffs to get people out that are not favored. This is a pretty large-scale practice,

Advice to Senior ManagementChange the Manager level and Director level assignments. Change the fear-based culture that is perpetuated with the "bonus" plan.

Great to work for if you don't mind placing your mental, physical health and family in the back burner

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Fresno, CA (US)

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric for more than 8 years

ProsSalary, Benefits and "Job Security (which is really not secure)"

ConsWork environment lacks cohesiveness/Opportunities not based on performance but Favoritism (Inc. Nepotism)/Supervisors are generally apathetic towards subordinates/Opportunities are intentionally stifled/High pay is often used as an excuse to demoralize & control/Reactive Work environment/The company views administrative employees as disposable

Company focus on style over substance

Management (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA (US)

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 10 years

ProsBenefits are decent; definite decline in options over last 3 years; salary is average to below average. Company is large enough to where employees feel like they have job security but in reality job security doesn't exist

ConsBeauracratic, slow moving and very siloed. If you are a caucasian male with white hair (or balding) performing isn't necesary for promotion

Advice to Senior ManagementStop promoting people that tell you what you want to hear so much; the same white haired, male caucasian employees gets promoted over qualified others to frequently. The scary thing is with all of the accolades and awards on diversity there is one black VP and one latino EVP out of 50+ executives within the utility How embarrassing is that

Very political, not so rewarding career

Senior Software Developer (Current Employee)
San Ramon, CA (US)

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than a year

ProsYou get to know how to play politics! Few positives otherwise.

ConsPolitics and seniority are everything. Your career will be dead in 3 years. No new technology tried out. Still working with Windows 7. And the pay is very average.

Advice to Senior ManagementNot sure where to start. Top talent will never look at PGE unless there are dramatic changes. Outsourcing is the right way to go for now.

25+ yrs with PG&E, and it is the worst it's ever been.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA (US)

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 10 years

ProsComparable salaries/wages, job movement and advancement are available, benefits are good.

ConsCulture of fear and intimidation, unfortunately, is now the norm. Micromanagement is at its worst. If in management, morals and principals are to be left at home.

Advice to Senior ManagementCEO - Tony Earley and President - Chris Johns should not turn a blind eye or willfully condone, senior and middle management actions and behavior towards employees.
This was once a great company, a real family.
I had high hopes when Tony Earley came on board as CEO, that we would get back to that, but we seem to be drifting further and further away, at an alarming rate.

The Cons out-weigh the Pros

Administrative (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA (US)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 3 years

ProsBenefits...which most companies offer - health, dental,401k plan etc. There is a possibility of being ok if you manage to get in a "decent department" under decent management.

Cons-Good old boys club in management - been at PG&E for years, but are not skilled or competant
-HR sides with management, so they can do whatever they want to you - harass, bully, unfair -evaluations, illegitimate demotions, discrimination, held hostage in your job when you want to transfer
Penalties for management when they do all the above are "getting a coach" or watching a video
-Excessive Top layers while cutting layers at the bottom, the ones at the bottom do all the work!. Thus most employees are overworked because they are doing not one, but two or three jobs.
-A whole bunch of re-orgs for no reason, Old school atmosphere, less advanced programs
*Older employees have voiced there suffering in this environment but hold on to hope to "start living" when they retire.

Advice to Senior ManagementLegal intervention will cost the company greatly, so try to remain in compliance with company's policies and laws.
