I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pacific Gas and Electric has many career advancement opportunities and believes in promoting from within. They also offer great pay, good benefits, and pensions. The employees culture is one of great pride and a love for what they do. The pros far out weigh the cons.

    Cons

Mid level management is often very short sighted and more focused on their own personal gains rather than the company's overall success. Often mid level management is woefully under qualified for the positions which they hold but because of their tenure they are allowed to remain until expiring into retirement.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great people and great benefits. Lots of opportunity depending on where you work.

    Cons

A company that makes a profit sometimes has trouble seeing the value in investing in infrastructure NOW to save MORE money LATER.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in Electric Transmission system! You can't bookmark us against other utilties when you don't invest in your system the way those other utilities do.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The operational groups (Electric, Gas, Energy supply) are exceptional areas of the company with dedicated employees capable of world class achievements.

    Cons

The General Office support groups (Human Resources, Information Technology, etc.) face challenges in their current structures and capability to effectively support the operational lines of business. IT in particular is experiencing high management and employee turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The culture of GO does not align to the stated core values of the company. This is in distinct contrast to the operational units that make up the utility.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

If you play the politics right it's a good secure job.

    Cons

Dept. was not really open to change from a contractor. They had a couple of low level people calling the shots of how things were to be done and their thought process was wrong. Dept. mgmt did not really want to change.

    Former Employee - Intern

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

There is some real talent at the company. Recruiting has done a great job of finding more innovative thinkers, and the organization could be on a great trajectory as a result.

    Cons

Bureaucracy - very old school set-up, with closed door offices (a laugh in a progressive, start-up heaven such as SF). You risk being silo-ed, and the lack of coordination and information sharing between units may be difficult to overcome.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep investing in employee safety and in your future (employees that will want to stay and give back).

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric for more than 3 years

    Pros

Plenty of work and if you show interest management will generously allow employees to expand their skills within the group by offering involvement in a variety of tasks and projects. Teamwork is abundant as is also a positive environment. Executive management communicates with employees often and takes an active role in understanding things from an employee level.

    Cons

Backwards hiring and promotion process in some areas. While it seems like much of the rest of the world is getting on board with hiring the person and training the skills, PG&E is a test based hiring and promotion process in many departments. The tests aren't impossible but unnecessary because if the person is already doing the job well then it would seem that a test would be a waste of valuable resources that could be better spent in conducting a better interview and/or training.
