ConsSmile and wave all the time.

Pros slightly tip the scale..

Engineer (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA (US)

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than a year

Pros401k AND pension plan, unbeatable health benefits, and some departments offer flex schedule (9-80,4-10). If under union contract, 2 pay raises and a bonus. Very steady and predictable

ConsExtended periods of intense stress, juggling too many different projects of different technologies under different PMs, required to be overnight subject matter experts with little or no training, and although you are not required to work OT - you might as well sign your own gravestone if you don't. You will be thrown into the deep end and you will not be taught to swim.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide training and resources.

A very positive place to work

Computer Client Support Analyst (Current Employee)
Rancho Cordova, CA (US)

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor for less than a year

ProsThe hours are great. The Pay is fantastic. Well developed culture. An excellent environment to learn, grow and excel in. A very well oiled IT machine.

ConsStarting as a contractor and hoping to be hired before the contract expires. The lack or contract extension capabilities. Competing for jobs against workers you become close with.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind a way to get contracts extended. That would stop such a high turn over rate.

Dedicated people, management turning around company

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA (US)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 10 years

ProsPeople are dedicated and for the most part want to do the right thing. Great teamwork in my former department. Outstanding benefits. While work/life balance can be a challenge due to unfilled vacancies, it is sympathetic and understanding if a significant personal issue arises.

ConsNew leaders brought from the outside were a little brutal at first but the company has settled down since then. Upper management will tend to look the other way if sr. leader doesn't demonstrate the company values as long as they get results. Lack of career progression lots of baby boomers in leadership jobs. Also slow to fill vacancies which led to burnout by some employees. The market is picking up so they need to be cognizant of this in the future or they could start losing some good people.

Advice to Senior ManagementAll said, doing a great job, keep it up and continue to remember, that its the people who make the company successful.

Contract Software Developer

Senior Software Developer (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA (US)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor for more than a year

ProsGood mix of experience levels. Senior level staff very willing to work to help new staff learn.
Project lead managed work level and schedule very well.

ConsAs a contractor, my interaction with business leaders was limited. I felt that I could have contributed more, but since I was not a company employee, my range of work was too focused.

Advice to Senior ManagementTeam management changed during the time I worked there. Not communicated well to contract staff members.

Excellent place to work.

Gas Control Tech (Former Employee)
Stockton, CA (US)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat pay, and benefits.Lots of opportunity.

ConsSome people working there make a sport of causing others trouble, these people are usually well connected, and for some reason tend to get away with it.Some people are treated better then others because of this.People who just want to do their job, without the drama, fall victim to these groups of people. I guess this occurs everywhere, but it shouldn't.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't make decisions based on rumors. Some people show up to work, and others to play games, with others careers.Find out what is really going, on without bias, from the rumor mill, before taking a persons career from them.
