Potential to be a great company consistently messed up by lack of leadership, strategy & direction.

Product Marketing Manager (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA (US)

ProsFor someone outside of Europe, a fantastic place for multi-cultural experience, particularly for business owners wanting experience dealing with international organizations.
The guys in Grenoble lot better than rest of the Europe.
If the BUs put their determination behind something, wonders can happen. eg., MEMs, power mgmt, etc.

ConsThe Director level mgmt needs a forklift change. Most have scant idea how to run/grow a business.
The leadership has no idea how to create a strategy to run a huge org; once in a while a hit comes along to save grace.
Huge dependence at all levels on who you know to get the job done. There are hardly any processes to run a multi-segment businesses.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo succeed, stop laying off US employees & remove the guarantees of lifelong-jobs in Europe. Start instilling high-performing leadership in key BUs to demonstrate performance based success.
Reward based on performance metrics as opposed to seniority & who you know.
Ask INSEAD to do a case study on why TI which was at the same position as STM has been able to do so successfully & implement the recommendations.

New technology - great, management and promotions non existant

Imaging Applications (Former Employee) Edinburgh, Scotland (UK)

ProsLearning and using the latest technology

ConsManagement, HR that spouted the company line permanently - didnt listen to employees.
Complete dis-interest in recognising staff achievements - unless you were in the design team.

Lack of pay rises and promotions, lower grade staff had minimal increases, enough to keep them on the bottom of the band levels that was all.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to listen to your lower staff, feed that through your middle management and listen all the way up. Dont ignore your talent

ConsBiased promotion and increment. Political place.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop recommending your wives as employees, they are better of as housewives. Not contributing to work yet hold high position for many many years

Right place if you are looking for bad people

Sr Digital Designer Engineer (Former Employee) Milan (Italy)

ProsSome groups work on the cutting edge developments, interesting if you work in those groups.
Otherwise it is just a permanent job with a bad salary

ConsNever met so many bad people in a single job environment. It seems some of them don't really go to
their office to work but just to fill their life up.

    A completely disfunctional organization

    Engineer (Current Employee) Milan (Italy)

ProsI talk here only about the digital sector, the one I work in.
Potentially one could do lots of interesting work in STM on leading edge projects.

ConsManagement has often really no idea of what it is doing from a technical point of view.
Lots of money are wasted on losing investments, such as CMOS technologies, only to preserve jobs in France and Italy, for political reasons.
Careers are often based on personal relationship and/or seniority, not on real merits.
It is also very difficult to remove unsuccessful managers, often they are left without real responsibilities, but keeping their salary.

Advice to Senior ManagementResign. Hoping substitutes are real businessmen, and not politicians in disguise.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
