I have been working at SYKES full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

My particular assignment was in was easy breezy, I had lots of free time to do other things (which shall go undescribed), but this pro is specific to me.

    Cons

My experience was that they didn't promote according to merit. My businesses don't, unfortunately, but this company takes the cake. The out-going supervisor employed his old school friend --- who was SO illiterate he couldn't spell simple words correctly. Neither could he type more than 10 words a minute. The old school friend brought the whole show into collapse when the client (whose offices we worked in) fired Sykes and got a fresh team. The "old school friend", hired unmeritoriously, has been unemployed ever since.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a culture of sensing talent and giving recognition and reward for it. Realize that hiring on the basis of friendship can cause loss to the company and, as I witnessed, loss to your own job.

I have been working at SYKES full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Young, fun, group of people to meet/ work with.
    Learning about financial products/banking
Its easy to get away with not doing any work as the managers are total airheads.

    Cons

Management are absolutely useless and it will ruin your time at work. Staff have been underpaid for a month and it won't be corrected for months as team managers are very unhelpful. You will be thrown in the deep end with little training and no support. Team Managers will not answer questions, you are told to look it up whilst customers are getting angry on the phone awaiting a simple answer to be confirmed when you are unsure. You will deal with abusive customers everyday and when they ask to speak to a manager the managers will make excuses to speak and have you deal with them in other ways. You may not be comfortable with the work you are undertaking and you will still be trained into extra departments (e.g complaints line) without a choice and with no pay rise. You will be Never will be appreciated for doing good work only spoken to when you are being coached on how to reach unrealistic targets. Thing I have learnt most over the year is Westpac is actually a terrible bank so be prepared to deal with complaints and abusive customers. After 6 months if you are always well behaved and have good statistics you can apply for a team manager position where you will earn a massive increase of 50 cents per hour. There is no where to progress from team manager. This is essentially a call centre who has no real connection with Westpac bank.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Team managers are first point of contact for all employees. Hire competent people with management experience, not people with neck and face tattoos who are looking for the 50c pay rise per hour. I've never seen such a massive staff turn over at a workplace, it's clearly because the staff are just treated as numbers.

I worked at SYKES full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I actually thought it would be a better experience working the US site rather than one of the outsourced locations. That was a huge mistake.

    Cons

Company events that focus more on drinking by and with upper management. Very bad pay for position working in. To many double standards or no standards at all. Management contradicts each other in front of employees and then wonders why the performance is so bad. Duh!! No one knows what to expect. Favoritism runs rampant. Fraud is okay but being absent is not. As long as agents sell, the rest of their performance apparently doesn't matter. There is so much more than can be said, but does anyone really listen anyway? I doubt it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As long as the current management is in place at the Lakeland II site, I don't think they have a prayer of getting any better. You have AMs that suggest to take away agent sales commission if the WTR is not met, you have others in management that don't know what's really happening in their own site. Rather than fixing a problem, they just move it around to look like it was fixed. Site management is stuck on doing a dog-and-pony show for clients and other senior Sykes management to attempt to paint a rosy picture when the fact is the site is a disaster in management. Promotions are almost non-existent for people that can make it better, they would rather put their friends in the position and then protect them. To be honest I'm surprised the client (AT&T) has not pulled their business, unless they've had such a smoke screen blown in their face too. I have no opinion of the CEO but if I was him, I'd be embarrassed with the Lakeland II site management and performance. The site can be so much better but not with current management.

I have been working at SYKES part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Saves you from living under a bridge. Saves gas commuting to another dead end job,

    Cons

Enduring poor management, godawful training, poor communication, draconian customer service policies (actually lack thereof). Paying for all of the technical items necessary to work including expensive landline phone. essentially no benefits. No job security whatsoever. Unfulfilled promises. No kudos or time to fix other's mistakes, and there are many due to the people they attract. eg. Two minutes for after call work before warning issued even if customer has been very poorly served ... Customer must stay on hold even if it takes 45 minutest to fix an issue. Reps promised full time but then get part time after training. Minimum wage while training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advise your applicants they will be treated like garbage for close to minimum wage rather than the company line while recruiting.

    Cons

I could write a book about all of the cons!!! Decisions made based on perceptions, feelings, gossip, and "noise" not made with facts, forethought, or sound judgement.

I have been working at SYKES full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great job for Customer Service reps who are looking for experience in the industry as well as people who want to advance their career. Sykes does promote from within so you can learn as much as you can from the various training and opportunities offered.

    Cons

Once you reach management level, your job security if pretty much out the window. The company says they strive to promote from within etc. however, when people who have been with the company for a while reach a certain level and are seen as invaluable because of another company acquisition, they aren't considered important anymore regardless of how long they have been with the company.

So, if you do strive for management, know that once you get there, your time with Sykes is limited regardless of your performance because the "new" company will be considered the golden children until the next acquisition. Lay offs are the norm now for management. Who wants to work for a company like that? Not me, which is why I have my resume out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate the people you have and stop making every new company you acquire and the people from that company the preferred ones. Treat everyone within the organization within respect and do a better job of communicating why all the lay offs happen.

    Pros

    Pros? What's that at Sykes?

    Cons

The corporate culture is based on intimidation and unfriendly manners. You won't learn much, there's basically no training and the leadership is nonexistent: your immediate superiors are basically there because they're somebody-more-superior's friend.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go get some managerial qualifications and some ethics and then come back to business.
