I worked at Seagate Technology full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I had a great team and manager. I also enjoyed the ability to grow and further my education along the way. I was provided several opportunities to further my experience outside of my title

    Cons

The pay is very low and I was strung along for years being told that I would get a promotion which never happened. The company is overall very slow to act and it hinders some real innovation from happening.

I worked at Seagate Technology full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

What I liked best about Seagate is the general work ethics and the transparency. When unpleasant decisions had to be made they would tell you and they would not tell you lies. Teamwork is generally very good. Working at Seagate can be very rewarding (it applies primarily to the distant past though)

    Cons

Seagate tends to accumulate useless layers of management, and often these are the typical "yes" people who have little of an idea what is going on. Seagate also has the ability to clean up itself, but I have seen many good people let go, because the "yes" people would not know better. In the recent years, STX have "encouraged" highly paid people to leave and have retained the inexperienced ones. They are cheaper and object less.
In some places, some ethnic groups are highly overrepresented in the workforce - not good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce management and bureaucracy (a PO that needs > 2 weeks to be created is just ludicrous). Encourage critical discussions and do not throw out the people who do that.

I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Lots of talented people
    Lots of projects
Work Life Balance / Depending on Department

    Cons

Marketing needs retooling (ancient dinosaurs, free loaders, shady seedy types_
Instead of overworking people, focus on effective communications, lessen the need for politics, and get the tactics fine tuned before you preach about strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote those who actually work, stop kowtowing to those who don't pull their weight. Don't get lost in the politics, this is still a great company and can definitely overtake its competitors, just WAKE UP and cut the FAT!

If you're good at 30,000 ft birds eye view, then stay there and don't play in the weeds with the foot soldiers. Stop rewarding the dead weight, be efficient, stop pretending, and stop campaigning constantly. Focus on your most valuable assets which is your TEAM and work on your communication skills. Please hire a decent WEB team, and realign priorities! (EX: Largest product category should be respected, treated, and compensated accordingly. Don't pay the big bucks to people who take 3 months to run reports or answer emails. True story.)

I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Pay is decent and majority of workforce is top-notch. Technology is exciting and pace is fast.

    Cons

Executive management mostly is not helpful. Structural problems in many organizations limit improvements that can be made.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tie bonus compensation to what lower level employees receive. It makes no sense why VPs and above get multiple 10's of % bonus when employees get 1%. Move low performing directors out of their position and get people that want to make a difference in those positions.

    Pros

work life balance-- 9 to 5, cant believe those companies still exist :)
    decent pay
    decent benefits
    good co-workers
company is doing alright for now

    Cons

    no career growth
except for few groups, its mundane work, nothing cutting edge
a dinosaur-- not sure if it can survive in the rapidly changing industry, with competition from smaller, nimble companies
if you want to grow this is not the place; if you want to spend a few years before your retirement then this is the place
    location--winters get really brutal

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

its only a matter of time before ssd companies start taking your business, make sure products in new markets are successful. take initiatives to change the work culture, make sure ppl are challenged on a daily basis and things are actually deliver on schedule. engineer culture needs a major revamp.
