    I worked at TxDOT full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Most employees arrive around 08:30am even though start time is 08:00am, they then take a break from 1000-1015am and walk around outside the buildings, you can leave for lunch by 1145am and not return until 1:30Pm (they allow you to take 30 minutes to walk or exercise from 1:00-1:30pm). They provide showers in the building so you can shower after your walk from 1:30-2:00 pm. You then get another break from 3:00-3:15pm for another walk outside around the buildings. Most employees are headed home by 4:45pm. TXDOT allows you to receive a 30 minute massage (you must pay for it) downstairs in the office building for 30 minutes once a month and you can take Yoga in the building as well, once a month, all while on the clock. Directors and Mangers are seldom in the office, out traveling or somewhere?

    Cons

    TXDOT secretly monitors everything you do,on your office phone, your computer, your TXDOT cell phone and TXDOT vehicles like Nazi Gestapo's and the KGB. You have absolutely no privacy even if you are doing nothing wrong. Way to bureaucratic, to many controls, its ok if you are a TXDOT minion. You need to get approval from way to many individuals in order to do something, i.e. if you need to pass gas get permission from 3 people and then TXDOT requires an air permit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Trust your employees until they prove otherwise. Start enforcing the 0800 start time, do away with all the breaks and luxuries (Yoga classes, messages, etc..), so that the Texas Tax payers get a full 8 hour day out of TXDOT employees, and then you wonder why our roads are in the condition they are.

    Job agency does is admirable. Some supervisors are unscrupulous schemers, liars and thieves.

    Pros

    Does excellent work for Texas and its citizens

    Cons

    Agency supports supervisors even in the face of evidence of lying, discrimination and of other wrongdoing. Appeals are useless since the whole process is for labeling the agency correct in its actions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Check employee claims against what supervisors allege, you'll probably find some are using the system and it's flaws for ill-gotten gain. EEOC is investigating now.

    Pros

    Most of the coworkers helpful, friendly.
    On site cafeteria
    Park like areas outside under trees

    Cons

    Can be a little like "Lord of the Flies"
    Branch Managers can be vindictive, lack leadership qualities
    Pay was low, now it's worse

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Management does not live by the golden rule. Huge pay increases for you, employees get our jobs cut. We all work hard and to outsource us ostensibly to save money conflicts with the huge salaries you men are making. We are taking a pay cut and our employment with the state has been cut, while other (current) state employees get raises. Think about what that does to morale and motivation.

    Micro managing. Managers don't care what's going on as long as the leads do work

    Pros

    * reasonable work hours; almost always 40, unless you want to do more.

    Cons

    * below market salary rates
    * lack of mentoring / direction for new employees
    * lots of arbitrary deadlines
    * culture of poor communication. employees on the ground have little chance of knowing what's actually going on.
    * lots of administrative overhead (detailed timesheets, status reports, a fair number of unnecessary meetings)
    * large bureaucracy makes it difficult to get things done
    * management never makes changes in response to feedback

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Basically, you have no trust or respect from the employees whatsoever. Management only appears to be interested in cost-cutting and outsourcing, and is destroying the organizational culture. Employees in the halls talk openly about when they're "getting out." Without exaggeration, I can say that this is the worst management I've ever seen, and they could hardly do worse if they were trying.

    People are great and friendly.

    Management can be a bit overwhelming with unrealistic deadlines. Lack of opportunities for advancement.
