Not a Culture for success

Sales Representative (Current Employee)
Winchester, VA (US)

I have been working at UniFirst full-time for less than a year

ProsTraining process is a good one.

ConsManagement doesn't know how to manage people, They all manage activity, hoping they can create successful clones if they all duplicate successful activity.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to manage people and realize this truth, successful people will always have successful traits and activities. BUT if you teach the who, what, where and when of the narrative, it does not guarantee a success. When you teach and they learn the who, what, where, when and WHY of the narrative you have opened the door for success. Number crunching doesn't achieve any of this.

No work life Balance

Route Sales Representative (Former Employee)
Marysville, WA (US)

I worked at UniFirst full-time for more than a year

ProsThe more you work the more you will get paid. You can make some serious money at this company.

ConsThe management has no interest in you on a personal level. they only care about the money you bring in. They are not willing to work to create and even work life balance.

Advice to Senior ManagementBranch Managers need to hold their District Service Manager'/s accountable for their employees time. DSM's waste alot of peoples time thinking they are more important.

Hello, I am terribly sorry to hear about your experience at UniFirst. It is very uncharacteristic of the organization and is not tolerated. I was wondering if you were able to have a conversation ... More

Outside Sales Representative (Current Employee)
Bossier City, LA (US)

I have been working at UniFirst full-time for more than a year

ProsCoworkers, and the job itself is great.

ConsManagement needs training in management. The service is terrible at this branch and the reputation is well known.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat people equal. It's ok to like some more than others but at least at work treat them equal. Also teach them product knowledge. 5 weeks of teaching them how to say "How does that make you feel" is ridiculous, and 1 more thing...quit cussing at them at meetings. How unprofessional is that? What kind of moral do you expect talking to people like that !? Hopefully all branches aren't like this one. I find that hard to believe.

This is a poorly run company

Sales Representative (Former Employee)
Dothan, AL (US)

I worked at UniFirst full-time for less than a year

ProsThe company training is probably the strong things that the company has going. It does a ok job in preparing you for the field

ConsTheir approach to attracting new customer is to promise the world than we will screw them. The contract is nicely written for UniFirst to take advantage of customers. However, Unifirst is no difference than other companies in this industry.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe location of where I worked has MAJOR problems in local management and regional sales manager. There has been numerous sales representatives pass through there that stayed less than a year on the job. The blame is always placed on the representative. It is pretty easy to conclude that the management skills are poor. The regional sales manager is over his head and lacks skills to manage. But, he does a good job kissing upper management rears. It is time for changes at this particular location

Terrible for sales professionals

Territory Sales Manager (Former Employee)
Northeast, NY (US)

I worked at UniFirst full-time for more than a year

Prosnot many to list here

Consno support from management, antiquated everything including reporting tools and systems, churn for drivers who basically account for your sales is unreal. You're basically f'd if you work here.

Advice to Senior Managementstep into the year 2013 or at least 2000. Pay your sales people. Don't make them wait 13 weeks after install for a driver to drop the ball 10 times and lose accounts and lose your hard earned sales. Too much to write. But first, paper forms for orders in triplicate? Nothing at this company is electronic.

Not a good company to work for.

Sales Representative (Current Employee)
Warwick, RI (US)

I have been working at UniFirst full-time for more than a year

ProsThey will hire anyone with a pulse and any sales experience on their resume. Pay is good for entry level. Lots of training most of it actually pretty good.

ConsThey make you watch videos about the dead founder. They make you watch anti union videos. The pay never gets better. The Route Sales (drivers) hate the sales staff. They see any account that is not a whale as a pain in the backside. Many inside staff have been there for 30 years and resist change. They treat Sales people like temps because they are. You are a thief if you want a sample towel for a potential client. They recruit recruite recruite even when they have a full staff, ask youself why? The dreaded Blackberry that they are obsessed with.

Advice to Senior ManagementNone they are so sure of their business model that they will languish in mediocrity for the rest of their lives.

Over worked and under apperciated

Sales Representative (Former Employee)
Marysville, WA (US)

I worked at UniFirst full-time

ProsDecent training program. Learned skills that will transfer to other occupations.

ConsThey don't give any administrative time. They want you cold calling from 8am to 5pm and you must work on proposals and presentations in your own time. You must also prepare for prep meetings in your own time. Everyone I worked with either worked 60 hours a week or was constently in trouble.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote someone from sales to sales manager or borrow someone from another location so they understand what is going on. Take a look at your buisness plan and see the huge leaky faucet that is your sales departments.
