When I worked there it was a great place to work. Just not as challenging and motivating as it used to be.

    Pros

Good work/life balance, lots of perks, resonable PTO policy.

    Cons

Redirecting and pivoting led to burnout on projects

I worked at Zynga full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Two meals were catered every day, and special care was taken to accommodate anyone's dietary restrictions.

I worked in a room full of very experienced game developers from all walks of the industry, including a few legends from my childhood.

For the most part, everyone was friendly, helpful, and invested in helping you succeed. Even when the whole team is stuck in the office because your update keeps failing QA at midnight, they come to you to see how they can help, rather than complaining.

Zynga offers unlimited/untracked PTO for vacations and sick leave. Their official vacation policy was "You should probably take some." In an industry notorious for working developers to death, Zynga producers were known for pulling people aside and telling them to go away for a week or two for a vacation. And if a producer asks you to stay late to finish something, they'll sometimes offer you a day or two off in exchange. The whole office basically shuts down from before christmas through the new year.

    Cons

Not a lot of original IP or creativity, in some aspects of their games. Also, the product managers are making game design decisions based solely on market statistics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to keep on top of bonuses and and leveling up for your teams.

I have been working at Zynga full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Compensation is good. Currently my work life balance is solid (though there were several bad months last year). I genuinely love working here; headaches and all. As soon as management chooses one path for more than a month in a row, I will raise my ratings to 5 stars.

    Cons

Coming from mainstream gaming, the Social game creation at Zynga was a surprise. Things have changed in the last year, but when 10+ years of game design experience was overruled by a rookie MBA Product Manager, I seriously questioned my decision to join. However, my new PMs are great and respect flows both ways. The trick is getting with the good ones and avoiding the bad ones.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a direction and let us execute on it. Quit pivoting, please.

I worked at Zynga as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Great perks, free food, massages, acupuncture, reflexology, exciting company quarterly parties
    Fun people
Felt like I was part of something growing

    Cons

Your experience could vary enormously based on your role and your team, and how that fits into the company's priorities
    Many people look overworked

I have been working at Zynga full-time

    Pros

You can work your way up in your own field, or even jump fields if you can prove yourself. There is a strong team feeling, and regular attempts to bring attention to people who were going the extra mile for the team. I have heard my managers making sure I have taken off enough time than be concerned with how much time I'm taking off. They want to keep their employees from burning out and make a concerted effort to encouraging a healthy work life balance as opposed to the 60+ hour weeks start ups are known for. Also, there benefits are awesome.

    Cons

The company has changed over the years, which means you will find pockets of managers that don't follow the current direction of the company. Similarly games are often compared to the hits, so inexperienced managers try to push for hit numbers before their product is strong enough to support it.

    I worked at Zynga

    Pros

We were a bunch of gamers, be it console, social, computer or board games but with such diverse backgrounds and knowledge that you could easily learn a lot from the people sitting around you. Another huge benefit of the company was having access to food and coffee all the time, especially since you're working 8-15hr shifts. As a representative it was also a fantastic experience to work with teams outside the country and state to help our players or build towards a better game. I came out of the company with a better outlook on my position as someone from the CS org as well as build many skills to help me grow in any company. One last benefit was you have ownership and freedom to complete those tasks (within reason). It's nice to have that ability and experiment on your own without being a drone.

    Cons

It was hard for the department to press forward because every time we thought we were pushing to something better things would get retracted to procedures that were done months or years back. As a company the departments just seem to be confused causing communication issues due to the disbursement or removal of teams. When issues like that arose the responsibility was never redistributed so it was a guessing game. After some time staffing also became a big issue which also contributed to communication issues with more confusion that left teams scrambling to establish the level of care and devotion to the games that use to exist. One other problem that could also be said for a lot of other companies is that the wrong kind of people were hired for particular positions. Their personalities and bad tastes for decisions left a division within teams.

I worked at Zynga full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I joined Zynga at its early stage, a lot super brilliant and hard working people.
    Great benefits
No need to get up too early to go to work. you can go in late and leave late.

    Cons

    Too much politics going on
work & life balance was poor
Too many poor decisions from management team
Too many PMs and decision makers
but despite all these, it is definitely one of the best places to work at in the gaming industry.

I worked at Zynga full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

People were friendly and fun to work with.
Was treated well and valued by the company over all.
Good pay overall as Senior -> Principal engineer role over time.

    Cons

Weekly release feature cadence grinds could get pretty monotonous.
Engineering work often degraded into repeated Actionscript3 and JSON for feature creation on web based games. Most engineers wanted newer challenges to tackle (understandably).
Other peoples dogs barking and peeing under my desk repeatedly during work hours. (No I didn't have a dog.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create more opportunities to innovate and create truly unique products by the people doing the creating.
