Operations Intern at Sherwin-Williams

Accepted Offer – Reviewed Jun 07, 2013 New

Interview Details Fairly involved interview process for a summer internship. First was a phone interview with an HR representative from the corporate office in Cleveland, OH. About 2 weeks later I was contacted by an HR representative from the Morrow plant. I was invited to interview at their facility, and met only with the HR contact from before. Got a quick site tour and was informed that I would be contacted in about a week. Contacted again to come back for another interview and met with my future manager and his boss. Interview was very typical STAR setup and heavily focused on my previous experience.

Interview Question – Explain a situation when someone disagreed with you and how did you remedy the situation.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – Very little negotiation.

Management Training Program (MTP) at Sherwin-Williams

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Mar 2013 – Reviewed May 29, 2013

Interview Details I started looking for jobs for recent grads in January before graduating this May. I applied at the end of January and heard from a recruiter early in February via email She asked for a skype or phone interview. I opted for the phone interview.

The phone interview was your basic interview questions. For help on these I researched the company history and also googled basic interview questions. Printed it all off and waited on the call. They do call on time! Be excited and have questions to ask. Interview tip: End the interview asking: By looking at my resume and speaking with me do you think I will be a good fit? What are these next steps in the hiring process? When should I expect to hear from you again. I was told a store visit/informal interview with store mgr and asst. mgr and then an interview with the DM.

She said it would be a week but it was a waiting and emailing game from here. I followed up with a Thank you email to the recruiter and about 2- 2 1/2 weeks later she emailed me saying she forwarded my info to the DM. Close to mid March I finally got a call to go interview with the DM. I actually started to think I did not get the job since I was never asked to go on a store visit and like you, I read numerous interviews and that seems to be the norm.

I over prepared for the interview: I compiled questions from this site and google, researched the company present and past. TIPS: Know why you want to work here. Love customer service and know what it is, and have examples where you excelled at it and all failed at it. You DO like to work hard and you DON'T expect to sit behind a desk. You DO work well under pressure. Know you will have to relocate.

The interview was laid back at times and intense at times. It ended with me feeling confident but slightly unsure. He did want me to go on a store visit and then follow up with him.

The store visit was informal. I could literally ask anything and was able to get a good look at what was expected. As an assistant you work hard and earn your stripes. It is a physical job and then turns into a desk job as you move into a store mgr position. As a female who is slightly out of shape it is not going to kill you.

I followed up the next business day via the phone with the DM. He asked me what I learned, what questions did I ask, what stuck out the most, do I understand the roles an mtp, asst, and store mgr plays. He called me back a few hours later and offered me the JOB!

Next you are emailed an offer and have to officially accept it within a week. Following that you have to go through a background check which takes forever and a day. Next thing you know you are right in the mix of learning all about paint.

Interview Question – Give me an example/scenario of a time you failed at providing good customer service.   View Answer

Negotiation Details – No negotiating pay. However, it is pretty good for recent grads. More than others are paying at the moment unless you have a specialized degree.

QA Lead at Sherwin-Williams

No Offer – Interviewed in Cleveland, OH (US) Aug 2012 – Reviewed May 15, 2013

Interview Details I went through 3 rounds of interview, 1 was HR, 3 were technical.
HR was the usual trying to get information on my experience etc.
The first technical was basic while the second was advanced.
I thought I did great but wasn't offered a position.

Interview Question – None as such, the advanced tech was kinda more than expected but I had extensive experience so I did good but looks like they weren't impressed.   Answer Question

Management Training Program (MTP) at Sherwin-Williams

No Offer – Reviewed May 10, 2013

Interview Details The phone interview was very relaxed. There was no rush to get through the questions and the interviewer was very clear with what she was asking. The conversation started off with a little background information myself as well as the company. She also went into what the position required and what the company was looking for in an employee.

Interview Question – There were not unexpected questions. Just be prepared to answer "Tell me a time when you.." questions.   Answer Question

Store Manager at Sherwin-Williams

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Denver, CO (US) Aug 2009 – Reviewed May 10, 2013

Interview Details The hiring and interview process was very efficient and inviting. Starting with the HR dept, these people are very friendly, engaging, and obviously are enthusiastic about their job. The process then moves to the hiring manager. Since Sherwin hires from within, each of these people have experience in the job position in which one is applying for. Overall, this is a very engaging interview process.

Interview Question – 'What excites you about managing your own business?'   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – There was no negotiation for the store management position. There is a base that is offered to all new prospective employees and it is very competitive within the industry.

Assistant Store Manager at Sherwin-Williams

Declined Offer – Interviewed in Aug 2009 – Reviewed May 08, 2013

Interview Details Pretty structured, first interview with HR over the phone, then in person, and finally with the store manager or regional director. Overall rather standard, there was no panel-type interview involved. There were some odd questions that didn't have much to do about the position or company, which i assume was to get a better perspective as to who you are as a person, but they definitely felt forced. Overall, though, a pretty straight forward process.

Interview Question – What impression would someone have of you in the first 5 minutes of speaking with them?   Answer Question

Reason for Declining – Not the right fit
