Current Employee - Reporter in Washington, DC (US)
Current Employee - Reporter in Washington, DC (US)

I have been working at Associated Press full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Strong moral compass, a leader in news, always able to set the agenda. Decent stability in an industry perennially in flux. A lot of name brand value and credibility. Good place to learn your trade and reasonable and quick opportunities to move up or on to new positions. Overtime is paid to reporters. Can be family friendly in terms of hours.

    Cons

Supervision can be limited. Internal recognition is sparse. Not always youthful or full of innovation. An old brand model, that is adopting, clunkily, to the present moment (though at least an electronic medium). Management is making raids on benefits nearly every contract negotiation. Union shop means that you will rarely get a raise outside of the ones prescribed in the contract.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a better way to integrate youth, innovation and new media concerns into your existing operation. Don't be nearly as resistant to new methods. Strongly consider a standalone web site, as opposed to simply feeding others.
