I worked at Capital One full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Very bright people to work with and very interesting work - if you are in the right place, and that seems to be getting harder to do according to my friends who still work at Cap One.

    Cons

Career advancement highly dependent on your manager - they can make or break your career. You will probably change managers frequently. The 360 review process and dreaded "cross calibrations" make the review process more like getting into a college fraternity than properly assessing your performance. You can easily get "blackballed" by a manager other than you own. You will have to spend time on political tasks that advance your "brand identity" to as many managers as possible. This, however, is a fact of life in the modern corporate environment at Cap One if you want to advance.

Cap One is now so top heavy in risk management and process management that it really is becoming "just like any other bank." Additionally the work environment, at least at the West Creek campus, is like being in kindergarten where everyone sits around a big table to work. Great if everyone is polite and considerate, but not so great for those who talk on their cell phones or hold conference calls on speakerphone. Invest in a good pair of in the ear, noise cancelling headphones and bring your favorite play list with you to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to cram more and more people into less and less space and expect people to buy the lie that it is to foster a "collaborative" work environment. If that was true, you would have enough private work spaces available for meetings and conference calls.
