Former Employee - Programmer in Troy, MI (US)

I worked at CareTech Solutions full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The benefits are great including PTO, dental, medical, vision, a 50% matching 401K (up to 6%, used to be 8%), life insurance, and dependent care pre-tax allowances.

    Cons

CareTech is an IT Outsourcing for hospital systems, which among other things, means it has many customers. On the surface, it looks like a well run company with plenty of growth. After all, they have won the "Best in KLAS" almost every year. However, if you dig under the surface and observe the company from within, you will notice there are no processes, documentation, or direction to be found. This company (which has over a thousand employees) operates on a day-to-day basis and planning has never been its strong suit. Whatever customer (client) is the largest new acquisition gets all the attention. This is not unusual, but the fact that CareTech will change how their entire company operates to satisfy the customer (regardless of how the other customers feel about it) is disconcerting. If you are a smaller customer, you should be happy if you get anything from CareTech as you are drop in the bucket compared to the "big dogs" (this term is used there).

A few things you should know if you want to work at this company.

    1. Your manager will not support you. If you fail in any way, regardless of fault, be prepared to look behind you and find nobody there. The management at CareTech will give you plenty of lip service, but very little action. They are caught up in their own work and have very little time to actually do any management. They are there for themselves and if you do anything that makes them look bad, you will be marked for it.

    2. No direction. Don't expect to know what you are building towards or what you should be concentrating on. The company wanders almost aimlessly from customer's whim to customer's whim without any offical policy to speak of. This puts the employees at the mercy of the customer's desires. This includes wanting things the next day that have never been attempted or even changes to a system that cause an outage. All of this is acceptable as the company has no desire to put official policies in place to set expectations and curb ridiculous requests.

    3. HR works for management. Never go to HR. I warn you of this as they are notorious for passing information to managers and have a "prove it" attitude towards employees. They are very proud of the "no retaliations" policy that they don't enforce. If your manager was to beat you in public, they might side with you, but outside of that, make sure you have video or audio footage for the lawsuit you will need to file after you are fired.

    4. Upper Management (the C-Level executives like a CEO, CIO, etc.) are oblivious to the daily goings-on of the company and when there is the quarterly call from the President (of CareTech), he seems to know nothing that is going on within the company. He talks about how they are growing and how well everything is going without knowing the constant risks and lack of industry practices that exist within.

    5. Nothing will change. I was with this company for several years, and the only thing that changed was the number of customers. They have inadequate personnel for the number of customers they serve and the skill level of most is poor. They seem to hire the cheapest labor they can find and the skilled employees take the brunt of the workload on their shoulders until they give up.

    6. Nepotism runs wild. If you somehow get into CareTech without knowing anybody, be prepared not to succeed. You need to have friends in high places or marry someone related to a C-Level person to really move up in this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management really needs to look at the people in charge and know that the people at the bottom are what is keeping this company successful. If you keep pushing them out the door or to the point of insanity, they will leave and your company will fail.
