Current Employee - Technical Marketing Engineer in Wilsonville, OR (US)

I have been working at Mentor Graphics full-time (more than 10 years)

This company is lead by an amazing CEO that knows every detail of the business and can talk technical to any crowd. The headquarters in Wilsonville OR is an amazing campus in a nice little town south of Portland. The benefits are on par with most high tech companies. They just switched to unlimited vacation. The company has been profitable for many years. The strategy is to only go after markets that they can be number 1 in or number 2 and growing.

The biggest problems in EDA and Mentor are:
     - Deep discounting. For some reason, Mentor and the leading EDA companies are now in a space where customers do not want to pay for software. Ironically, you cannot design electronics today without these tools. We see 95-99% discounts on big deals. While that can bring in a fat paycheck to the top level of the company, the trickle-down affect to the divisions is that many do not reap any money from the sale. Thus, they miss their targets.
    - Each division is run as a separate business with a P and L. This means that there is very little cooperation between product divisions in a lot of cases. It also can cause the "have" and the "have not" divisions. The haves get rewarded and the have not's struggle. Make sure you know what division is a "have" before taking a job here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appoint "vision" or initiative czars at the top of the company to drive solutions that include all the divisions that need to participate. For example, if the company wants to go after automotive, that encompasses many products in many divisions. Because the businesses are silos, they will never deliver a unified solution without a top level driver.
