I have been working at Sacramento Municipal full-time for more than 3 years

SMUD treats its employees very well. The pay is above and beyond what you would receive at a call center and the supervisors are top notch. Generally we are treated well and have all of our needs met. Benefits are comparable to other places and our health is a major priority for SMUD.

There is pretty much zero opportunity to move up the ladder at SMUD. Many of us enter the call center in hopes of branching out and moving into different departments or opportunities. Due to the good benefits, pay and scarcity of job opportunities, people stay in their positions until retirement and that means no chance for many qualified people to use their talent to benefit the company. The training department at SMUD is pretty useless. The final con is a Q.A. (Quality Assurance) department that spends hours scrutinizing a single call an employee received and manipulating the numbers so that they can ensure that they still have a job tomorrow. This is the equivalent of a police officer shooting into a home and then "arriving" five minutes later to take care of the problem. Employees are ripped by these "Monday morning quarterbacks" who are more focused on justifying their existence than helping customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have great employees who are capable of so much more than you give them credit for. They are smart, dedicated and have the intelligence to handle challenging situations. Instead of limiting their abilities and opportunities, give them the opportunity to grow and contribute even more to the company.
