    I have been working at Southwest Research Institute full-time (more than 5 years)


    The retirement contribution is great. Health insurance is good, but not the best. Company works on many incredible projects that help the scientific community. Many individuals at the Institute are extremely talented and intellectual.


    Where do I start? This company is extremely top-heavy, or "too many chiefs, and not enough indians." With so many managers, overhead costs are overwhelmed and when a lay-off does occur, the low paid workers are the ones that receive the boot. This company employs a "good ol' boy" system, bordering some form of nepotism. Senior management is ran by men who have been here for over 30 years, who've gained whatever experience through the culture at the Institute. There are extremely low chances in moving out of the position you are in, or moving into a more professional position. The only way one can move into a better paying position is being in the click with the good ol' boys. There is not that much diversity in senior management (in ethnicity and women). Raises are a joke, even when the Institute is doing great as a whole, compensation is abysmal. People who have a drive to do better and excel are thrown to the curb. Many people do very minimal work, while the minority do most of the work, though management takes the credit for all the hard work. Don't attempt to bring corruption or bad behavior of others' to management's attention. Management rather eliminate those that want to create a better business practice than eliminating those that abuse the system, because the deep dark secret is almost everyone is guilty of bending the rules. Management does not want to innovate their business practices, which is in total irony due to innovation being part of their mission statement. Business has been rapidly declining; this is due to the company's management style by not changing its image nor staying competitive. Management is an oligarchy that practices nepotism which is only concerned for the well-being of the elite few.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to your employees, they are the talent you need to stay competitive. Eliminate those employees that abuse the system and do not work. Restructure management with new blood and innovate for a changing market.
