I worked at Universal Truckload Services full-time (more than an year)

The vending machine guy, he's great about filling any food or drink request that your heart desires!

To start, walking through the doors every day is like walking into a funeral service. Everyone is so unbelievably miserable and bitter, which is a result of management and their oppressive rules combined with the extremely low pay and disgustingly terrible benefits. You will get scolded for everything from hanging too many pictures up at your desk to talking too much to a co-worker (even if its work related). They do nothing to encourage their employees, and nothing to reward them for great performance. Its almost like HR told them to make their employees feel as helpless and worthless as possible....because that is exactly what they do on a daily basis. No words of encouragement ever, just evil glares when they can hear your laughter and see you smile. I think management's senses are so acute to any kind of joy, they can hear the corners of your mouth widen as you start to smile- and you'll likely receive an email 12 seconds later telling you that smiling is no longer allowed unless you get written permission from management, and even then, must be limited to 3 times per month. This place is just the worst. Its too bad, too because they have a lot of great employees that would thrive given the opportunity and proper encouragement. Anyone worth keeping ends up leaving this company because better opportunities come along for anyone with any kind of drive, ambition and self respect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop micro managing! Hire competent managers that encourage their employees to grow and develop their skills- I promise you this will only help the company. Give decent raises to people who deserve them, bring back the Christmas party. How embarrassing to tell people your multi million dollar company doesn't hold a Christmas party for their employees. Offer competitive benefits! Outrageously overpriced health insurance with no coverage does not count as competitive, nor does 5 PTO days for your first calendar year, and a cap of 15 total (yup, thats right- 3 paid vacation week per year cap).
