Once a great company, now so focussed on 'share-price' profile, they forgot that ' our people are our greatest asset',

I worked at Alcoa full-time (more than 10 years)

Very talented and skillful shop-floor people keep the place running properly, and a top-of-the-range support staff of engineers, group leaders and admin complete the team. Safe work practices and good shift structures for the workers makes it a good job.

Poor top-level management focussed too much on increasing the company's profile by getting involved in poor performing operations just to 'boost production' - only to run them at a major loss?. Unfortunately the good operations had to pay for those bad decisions and employee morale has plummeted as a result. Austerity measures in a company that didnt need to go down that sort of path is such a shame.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Firstly, forget about trying to be the big-boy in town and just get back to what you do best which is make alumina and secondary products,
Secondly, try to remember that the company motto used to be that "our people are our greatest asset" and see if you can revive it.
Unfortuately, without the engagement of your people that actually do the work and make your products, you can never achieve the excellence that you aspire to.

It was a long time ago and very casual, just me and the soon-to-be foreman and the suoervisor plus someone from Personnel Dept as it was then known. Wanted to know what I had done and could I do the job, fairly sinple really

    Interview Questions
    • They asked if I wanted to be the manager of the place at some point in the future which seemed a strange question to someone applying for a 'shop-floor' position.   View Answer
