What we do
We manage investments for a wide range of clients, including public and private pension and retirement plans and others assets on behalf of millions of people from all walks of life around the world. We are also advisors and asset managers to companies, central banks, educational institutions, financial advisors, foundations and endowments.
Who do we serve
PIMCO’s clients include corporate pension plans, foundations, endowments, public retirement plans, global central banks, corporate treasury departments and a wide range of global institutional investors. PIMCO also serves high net worth families and retail investors through our mutual fund offerings. We offer clients a wide spectrum of choices to help achieve investment goals consistent with their needs and risk tolerance.
Where did we come from
PIMCO began in 1971 with three founders, an idea (revolutionary at the time) that fixed income assets could be actively traded to enhance returns, and $12 million in assets under management. The three founders—Bill Gross, Jim Muzzy and Bill Podlich—established the firm in Newport Beach, California, first as a unit of Pacific Mutual Life Insurance and later as an independent institutional money manager. Since the firm’s founding, PIMCO has continued to pioneer new investment strategies and tools; we were among the earliest participants in the derivatives market, mortgage-backed securities, the emerging markets and other sectors of the global fixed income market. Our long history of innovation and our entrepreneurial culture remain a key element of who we are today.
PIMCO is always seeking those ready to compete with the best in our business. We offer a wide variety of roles to interest and challenge both the investment-minded and the business-minded. Our firm is organized into four areas: portfolio management, account management, product management and business management. This structure, unique to the industry, is designed to promote the growth of our professionals and the firm by empowering each business unit to focus on what it does best.
The Account Management Group is an integral component of PIMCO’s three-pronged structure, combined with Business Management and Portfolio Management. The primary responsibility of the Account Management Group is to foster and strengthen relationships with our institutional client base. Account managers work in one of the following groups:
- Client Servicing
- Consultant Relations
The Product Management group provides motivated individuals with an opportunity to become thought-leaders and experts, both internally and externally, in a particular product arena. Product Managers have global responsibility for growing/maintaining a business line – developing distribution channels, analyzing the marketplace and competitors, understanding demand trends and crafting the marketing message.
PIMCO’s portfolio managers are primarily responsible for market research, portfolio strategy and trade execution. The portfolio management group consists of several areas, including:
- Portfolio management
- Credit research
- Portfolio analyst
- Portfolio analytics
PIMCO's Business Management Group focuses on establishing strategic initiatives, developing firm-wide technology and analytics, overseeing compliance and regulatory functions, and providing timely record keeping and investment support.

I worked at PIMCO full-time (more than 3 years)Pros
Brand label on your CVCons
Extremely political culture that detracts from real work, most people spend more time managing their images than managing money;
Junior employees and non-MBA employees are treated like disposable resources and no investment in made in these "second-class" slaves;
Poor compensation vs opportunities on sellside (all concentrated at top);
If you want to work here it is purely to get the name on your CV - this is a horrible place to workAdvice to ManagementAdvice
Consider changing the hyper political culture and let progression be based on merit, not pedigree MBAsDoesn't RecommendNegative OutlookDisapproves of CEO

- Application Details
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks – interviewed at PIMCO in October 2014.Interview Details
Applied via Careers page, was contacted for a phone interview with a young analyst. Since the position was for a LatAm team, part of the interview was conducted in Spanish to make sure I was proficient.
Was contacted a week or so after and was invited to a Superday in NYC. Superday consisted of 6 interviews with two breaks. They booked a hotel, and also said they would reimburse my roundtrip train ticket and any meals within reason (however, I have yet to receive any form of reimbursement and it's been a few weeks) The majority of the interviews were conducted via video conference and mainly 2:1. Half of the interviews in Spanish, half in English. They also kept asking me if I spoke Portuguese even though it wasn't written on my resume. The overall feel of the company is that they're very dry, serious, and incredibly overworked/stressed due to Gross's departure. Heard the Friday after the Superday that I was not selected, and I am pretty relieved considering recent news.
Interviews were mainly behavioral, run through resume, but then a few were incredibly technical and asked for investment recommendations and I was even asked about mortgage-backed securities.Interview Questions
