Challenging, frustrating, but overall a good experience.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at ADTRAN full-time for more than 5 years

ProsLots of leeway in regards to day to day. Ideas are heard. Minimal training for certain jobs.

ConsCafeteria serves the same ole thing over and over every day - no ethnic foods to speak of.

Advice to Senior ManagementValue your employees by investing in better training. Remove the 'intro to troubleshooting' training requirement for engineers - it's a waste of time.

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time for more than a year

ProsLack of micromanagement
Opportunities to learn
Friendly staff
Open-door policy
Never a dull moment

ConsLack of managing in certain individuals/groups allows for overly relaxed atmosphere leads to festering of problems.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to invest in key individuals. Get engineers into the field to interact with customers more often.

Nice company with family oriented structure, flexible and good learning scope since it has more than 1700 products.

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time for less than a year

ProsLearning, flexible, managers/leads with good technical understanding , free snacks :) in india office. atmosphere is positive and welcoming. Colleagues are nice and helping for a new recruit.

ConsThere are plans of further improvements and policies, but are been under taken with snails pace from higher management due to new establishment in India Office. No re-creation (Indoor) facility as yet.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are great plans in pipeline please implement it as quickly as possible to experience the benefits of it.

Great place to work

Design Engineer (Current Employee)
Huntsville, AL (US)

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time for more than 10 years

ProsFamily atmosphere. While there is some stress to get the job done, employee-employee and employee-management relations could not be better. Very enjoyable work environment.
Very talented engineering team, everyone pulls their share.
Management is conservative (long history of profitability) and accessible.
Traditionally low turnover.
Excellent facilities.

ConsGrowth has slowed compared to 10 years ago and the workforce is still relatively young making promotion opportunities hard to come by.
Benefits aren't bad, but for a company that prides itself on hiring the "best & brightest", overall compensation is a little low.

Company good, Huntsville... boring

Co-op Engineer (Former Employee)
Huntsville, AL (US)

I worked at ADTRAN as an intern for more than a year

Pros-One of the few big non-defense companies in town.
-Solid engineering folks.

Cons-Huntsville is a small city. As such, it is very boring for someone from a larger city.

Adtran OK - depends what you are working on

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time

ProsNice facilities, if you are in the Huntsville office (on-site gym and nurse). Traditionally, they were a stable place. Most engineers have own office - generally with a window. Facilities are best I have ever seen and Cafeteria is nice.

ConsDepends on are of work. I found my position one of the most stressful places I have worked - with an overwhelming amount of work and many long hours. But I see many engineers who work much less - depends on how your manager distributes the work and how willing team members are to help.. Don't expect big raises. I have had better benefits elsewhere - 2 weeks vacation for first five years is a bit hard but not uncommon. I can't say I care for Huntsville that much. Deliberation on eliminating individual offices,

Advice to Senior ManagementI would recommend a bottom up management reviews. Allow more Telecomuting - a large percentage of work can be done from home. Go for a flatter organization structure. Allow easier trasfer from one group to another.

Not the company it used to be

Channel Marketing (Current Employee)
Huntsville, AL (US)

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time for more than 10 years

ProsNice facilities, some good perks if you are in the Huntsville office (on-site gym and nurse). Traditionally, they were a stable place and rather laid back.

ConsThere is no clear direction coming from management and the only thing that seems to matter is the Wall St bottom line. Everyone is overworked and being tasked to do more with less. Morale is pretty shot.

Advice to Senior ManagementCome up with a clear vision to take the company forward. Invest in your people, new technology, new ideas to turn the company around.
