I have been working at Altera

    Pros

Good benefits, Actually building serious technical projects. I enjoyed being given a real project to work on with mentor support

    Cons

Office isn't very modern, everything is clean and functional, culture tends to emphasize work over life. Some eccentric people are there who don't work well with others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Altera as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Great people, good working atmosphere, supportive management. Training sessions available to learn new directions in industry. Well compensated, good health insurance.

    Cons

Many international offices, so syncing up with groups halfway across the globe can be a bit tricky (timing of meetings, etc), especially if you're not in the headquarters in San Jose.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep it up! Really enjoyed working there, great atmosphere to learn and grow career-wise.

I have been working at Altera full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Altera have a bright future in the FPGA business and FPGA is the asic of tomorow (FPGA will eat all the ASIC chip).

    Cons

The recent change in altera IC design depart have create a bad atmosphere for every one to work in. It's just too much politics at the TOP level management and this drags down the whole ICE department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the politics. Do what you mean and only say what you will do.

I have been working at Altera

    Pros

Great products and profit margin with limited competition. Nice campus. Hard to get fired.

    Cons

Myopic inward focus lacking understanding of customer needs. Puts Wall Street way above employees and customers. Overly political. Gravely out of touch senior management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Doing the right process or ROI analysis does not equal doing the right thing. Encourage authentic communication and don't punish people for dissent.

I have been working at Altera part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    The people are very talented

    Cons

There ia a bully culture in Altera and it creates a toxic work place. Middle management are under pressure to get results ( without any investment) from the exec level. They in turn bully the workers.
Its very political place. Its cheap though its a wealthy company they dont invest yet expect MS growth. Lack of direction is unreal and the re-orgs are just too much as you cant get anywhere as the direction changes mid way. HR is a joke and are certainly not there for the workers, if you arent a manager they wont even talk to you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your staff a little better. Invest in HR. Get an external company to carry out reviews and really see how your employees feel.

I have been working at Altera full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

People are helpful. Good teamwork among colleagues. Latest technology adopted for product. Salary is decent and benefits are alright

    Cons

Upper management demand a lot on deliveries but not proper reward or recognition is given when this is achieved. What is the point of asking so much when you don't reward accordingly! A lot of favoritism and politics especially on recent change of upper management.

I worked at Altera as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Helpful colleagues and supportive at times.

    Cons

    1) Lack of appreciation.
    2) Sorry to say this, but it is 100% fact, I try not to be racist sarcasm s here, but for all the workers working in Altera Penang Design Centre (Specifically in the ICE group) take a count on the non - chinese there.. Hardly find any, and if you do that's not going to be for long (must be a GT). I was introduced as the first non-chinese to join my group in the meeting. (surprised too). I am not stressing that majority is not good at their work, but without diversity in a group, most likely they will fail to develop in a positive way and be innovative at the same time. They will be too comfortable among themselves and not be able to cope with the real world.
    3) Please don't compare my (2) point with other department like the building 3 folks(NON RnD). Also not to mention RnD is a really huge umbrella, and my previous branch and comment is only dedicated to the ICE(circuit team only).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Specifically dedicated to RnD (ICE) managers, if you are not technically equipped just don't bother to stay there, just quit your job or volunteer yourself to be demote. Also try harder to appreciate people who really do the work rather than people who are good at talking.
    Please be diversify.
