    I have been working at American Red Cross full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Depending on your role, 8+/hr workdays are common, but it's comforting to know you're supporting a good cause. Most employees (and volunteers) are willing to go above and beyond for the company mission.

    If you are highly skilled and motivated, it's a great place to leave your mark. Management is very open to changes (especially if it means greater efficiency and better use of donor dollars), but you must be prepared to fully support and carry out your ideas. Talk is cheap, and tangible actions are highly valued.

    If you're not particularly skilled, but highly motivated, it's a great place to sharpen your skills. Management is willing to invest in your learning curve, but expect to be tasked with the same requirements as everyone else.

    Cons

    The organization is going through some growing pains, so there are many on-going changes. To survive, you'll need to keep an open mind. With new changes, understand that mistakes do happen ("Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity") and that everyone is trying their best to improve the overall organization.

    The pay is acceptable, but obviously doesn't compare with a for-profit company. (If you're expecting a high salary, why would you work at a non-profit?)

    If you're unmotivated by the organization's mission, you're going to have a bad time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    We need more in-house technical talent. "Budget constraints" are understandable, but It's very disheartening to always hear that excuse. There has to be other ways to attract more highly skilled people.

    And if anyone in any management role actually reads this:

    I worked at American Red Cross (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    The Red Cross has a great mission. They help people when they are in need. Those that do work for the organization are passionate and you get to work with the best volunteers in the world. It is wonderful to be able to help someone in their darkest hour and to learn from all the volunteers. As paid staff the benefits are decent.

    Cons

    There is no stability. In the years I worked there I saw no less than 4 nationwide reorganizations. The last two years moral has been low, as more work is pilled on those still left. Those expectations are added, and the expectation that the staff meet or exceed the goals or work load set before. There is no work/life balance as more expectations are added. Over the last few years moral has been low, as you constantly expected to be the next one let go. It also seems there was little regard as to the qualifications of those picked to stay in management.

    Give a system time to become stable. Communicate with your staff so there is better moral.

    Pros

    Good opportunity while it lasted. Great PTO and health benefits. Good pay while I was there. Great people to work with. Lots of caring people in the past.

    Cons

    Due to management's lack of money managing skills I was laid off with about 1200 others due to a lack of funds. Constant requests to complete projects by COB tomorrow. Great expectations and little help or time to complete it.

    Better money management and keep the positions necessary to support the remaining staff.

    I have been working at American Red Cross part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    1) Friendly staff and volunteers. 94% of the Red Cross Force is volunteers, and every single volunteer that I have meet are very dedicated to the mission of allieviating human suffering.
    2) A lot of volunteer opportunities and internship opportunities. I started out as their intern, then stayed to volunteer in two departments, before becoming their paid health and safety instructor.
    3) This company really cares about making a difference in the community! I have never heard or seen the Red Cross doing anything harmful or suspicious. This nonprofit organization is the real deal and every other nonprofit organization should look up to the Red Cross as a role model.

    Cons

    Low pay, but that's usually the case when working for a nonprofit. You work there not for the money, but to help poeple and feel satisfied with helping others. Also, job advancement is almost nonexistent. So if you get a job be prepared to stick to that job for a long time, or move to another company eventually if you want to advance in your career.
