I have been working at BKD full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

My supervisors genuinely care about me and my career and want to see me being challenged and able to grow. They take time to get to know you and develop you as a person.

    Cons

Structure is rigid, not a lot of opportunity to distinguish yourself early in your career. Lots of focus on keeping costs low. There is encouragement for work/life balance, but there is a lot of travel involved which limits that. Employees do not receive any type of health club benefits aside from a discount at the local Y. Low salary compared to other firms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Join the 21st century. Make sure people are enthused about their jobs. Consider the things that are important to them.

    Pros

Strong culture oriented towards service and client satisfaction. Good flexibility and work-life balance compared to other firms.

    Cons

Performance is mainly based upon hours rather than individual merit.

Continue to work on implementing a system that rewards individual achievement and actual skill level.

Very good work experience for public accounting, however lower salary and not as many benefits as other firms.

    Pros

Good work experience, put into areas/industry of request.

    Cons

Salary & benefits not as strong compared to other public accounting firms

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to give more financial incentives if want to compete with personnel benefits at other firms. Otherwise top talent will move on.

I worked at BKD as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

The pay is competitive and during busy season you can always find work to keep you busy. There is a chance for personal development here, but it is stifled by an office culture that has taught the individuals that quantity of work is much more important than quality.

    Cons

Staff was either to stressed or did not have enough time to answer any questions besides how to find last years work papers.
Merit is based primarily on quantity over quality (I.E. hours worked).
Even the staff warned the interns against working at BKD.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop using sayings like put the moose on the table and actually show the lower and mid level staff how to bring up problems by leading by example. Just because you have a saying in a rule book doesn't mean people will follow it.

I have been working at BKD

    Pros

Outside of busy season the hours are pretty flexible. Partners are willing to train you to get to the next level. Benefits and vacation are pretty decent compared to private companies.

    Cons

A lot of hard work and stress. Clients can be demanding. Pay raises for the first year are pretty abysmal. After that are much better, if you decide to stick around and wait. Management keeps messing with promotions and timing. This gets very confusing to younger staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand the job market has changed. Other companies are just as competitive now with better hours and benefits. Stop changing the promotion timing.

Great company to work for within public accounting.

    I worked at BKD

    Pros

Great opportunity to learn and develop as a professional. In addition, partners seem to genuinely care about giving employees chances to soecialize in industries of their choice.

    Cons

Work and number of required hours can be demanding. However, this is true for a vast majority of public accounting firms.

  9.

It's far from perfect, but it's a great place to work.

I have been working at BKD full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Small office environment with large national firm reputation and support, opportunities for growth and advancement, stability, high morals and standards

    Cons

Benefits and pay could be better, but they're still competitive. Very conservative partners/executives that are not open to change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You HAVE to be open to change and innovation. Listen to your young professionals and staff. Just because you're a Partner doesn't mean you know everything. You're behind the times and your people are your greatest resources, so listen to them.

I have been working at BKD full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Working with very talented individuals and learn a lot as a first year staff. The hours are not terrible during your first year, but get progressively worse.

    Cons

Underpaid, unrealistic expectations, work-life balance, benefits are non-existent, no incentive to stay, no diversity. Nearly impossible to work and study for the CPA exam.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees. The Big 4 and smaller firms have better pay. Offer rotational programs during off months.
