Good, but the overall strategy keeps on changing

Local Business Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Barclays full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood brand name , very strong presence in Uk and in sub Saharan Africa. Barclays issue has been that its strategy keeps on changing in different regions

ConsUnreliable strategy thinking. There is no reliable strategy in various regions that Barclays operates in. The thinking is personality driven instead of being fact driven

Advice to Senior ManagementThe geographic and business strategy needs to be thought through and not personality driven.Barclays entry in emerging markets in general needs to be thought through and then followed upon for some time.

Current employer @ BTCI - Worst place to work

Senior Analyst (Current Employee)
Pune (India)

I have been working at Barclays for more than a year

Pros1) Flexible work timings
2) Good leave structure
3) Work from home (Looks like pros but in reality it is con :)
4) Competitive pay scale

Cons1) Totally manager driven company. Your appraisal or bonus depends on yr relation with manager not on efforts you are putting. So if you don't work doesn't matter if you are good in .....( no need to specify :)
2) HR are worst--- You meet them only at induction and while leaving the company, I believe most of HR's are doing their interns as they themselves are not aware of Barclays policy.
3) Join company at B5 - PM level, not at B4(Tech lead) or B3 else your personal life is going to be miserable.
4) No Onsite - Racial discrimination.
5) Appraisal process is not well defined, it all depends on your relation with line manager.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think most of B5 Managers are getting recruited by using Jack without any interviews with their relation with former or existing employee at higher level. Please provide some PMP training to managers as most are from non-technical and non -it background. OR Change the way of recruiting B5 Managers by scrutinizing their management and leader ship skills.

Bureaucracy gone mad

Information Technology - GTIS (Former Employee)
London, England (UK)

I worked at Barclays full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat pension and flexible benefits (sickness, holiday especially at 30 days). Buildings are light and modern. Well defined lines of responsibility.

ConsToo much red tape. Too many people who think their role is to preserve the status quo. Too much focus on immediate results to the detriment of any future planning.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate a strategy for how technology fits within the business and deliver it.

Global financial services firm offering global career opportunities

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Barclays

ProsMany career options if capable of expanding internal network. Despite recent issues still seems to have a positive name to have on CV

ConsStill operates in Silos but on path to overcome this. Positive aspect of offering many career options also means that some people move roles too often and therefore create a lack of continuity

I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood work life balance if you want it

ConsPoor upper management; Have no idea how compensation decisions are made

Advice to Senior ManagementCompensate top performers; grow junior staff (very little respect for junior staff, top-heavy institution).

Good support network, diversified culture

Analyst (Current Employee)
Singapore (Singapore)

I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than 3 years

ProsChance to work in a truly diversified working environment, good support provided by the managers. Learning is encouraged. Opportunities to interact with some of the brightest people in the industry.

ConsLack of direction at the moment, lack of transparency to junior staff. Long working hours are expected and a norm, depending on the team you are in.

Motivating and Cooperative

Developer (Current Employee)
Singapore (Singapore)

I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than a year

ProsThe folks here in the firm are committed to delivering quality business to our clients (internally or externally).
Everyone is pretty much focused on getting the results and achieving the projects that were set up.

ConsQuality of certain employees are lacklustre. The lack of quality in certain departments are a stumbling block for the firm as some departments who wishes to drive the firm forward are tugged behind by these departments.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire and retain quality people (especially those with knowledge, drive and grew up with the company) instead of hiring mass but low quality employees.
