I have been working at Barclays as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    - good pay (esp for an internship)
    - colleagues are very supportive and helpful, I have learnt a lot during my time working there
    - good chance to receive return offer

    Cons

    - have to work overtime pretty often
    - stressful, competitive; but I guess it's normal for a giant financial institution like this

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

may not in the position to give advice to management since it's just a short term experience

I worked at Barclays full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting work, not bad remuneration, had lots of opportunities. Strong push internally to embed new values, not just for show

    Cons

Bureaucracy, lack of definition of responsibilities - too many people trying to compete to do the same thing. Move to a 'one Barclays' model making slow progress and moral was very low.
The flat hierarchy and promotion process meant that you could end up taking on much more responsiblity than you are rewarded for and people would work alongside each other with the same role and level of responsibility but different grades

    Pros

    Corporate bank quite interesting work/transactions.

    Cons

Depends on which department you work, not standardised across bank.
Does not have the prestige of the IB.

I have been working at Barclays full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working at Barclays has so many opportunities. You never really need to leave. It also has fantastic pension, annual leave, healthcare and the pay is pretty good. The bonuses are great. It is a very comfortable place to work. It is quite easy to network and move your way around. Its very 'PC' and friendly. Social scene can be varied. People are generally out of the office by 5.30pm and your work life balance is mostly respected.

    Cons

You have to play the game, rather than just be good at your job. There are so many people that you really have to work smart to stand out/avoid being a number. But everyone is kind and fair and so long as you work out how to play the game, the sky is the limit really. It can become quite stale with very little breadth to roles (i was there 6 years) but i enjoyed my time there and it has set my career up for the future - people really respect the name on your CV.

    Pros

Work environment is average, it's comparable to other large banks. They have great holiday parties. THere are opportunities for advancement but you may be required to relocate.

    Cons

The may make promises in the hiring decision and not follow through with them. Be careful if you are promised the moon.

I worked at Barclays full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great development, had no experience in training delivery but was given every chance to grow and improve my skills and abilities. My managers in this area were the best I've ever had and it is a meritocracy so hard work pays off. Development plans are clear and achievable. Very nice and well equipped training venues as well. The most tech focused bank and are way ahead of the competition in most of these areas.

    Cons

Overly complicated management structure where sometimes common sense cannot prevail as too many people need to be involved in a task. Although it is changing, the company is still very "Silo'd" - communication between departments is something that needs to be improved. Training department goes through many phases of displacements and restructures. Annual compensation not very good

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Many people are quick to use regulations to justify not cooperating with what you want, there are rules in place but there should be more emphasis on what actually can be done instead of stone walling each other
