ProsOn the whole the people are great, hard working & show passion for what they do. As a company, the brands are well established & prominent which looks good on your CV, it's fast moving which keeps things fresh & occasionally you can spot a celebrity on the office!

ConsAlthough it's fast moving, the company lacks ambition sometimes in what it does. It lacks drive, direction & communication from above in a very competitive market.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice would be to listen & trust what your skilled & experienced employees are telling you

ProsThere are some fantastic brands in the Bauer portfolio and to work on them is great for the CV as many of the titles are still highly regarded in the industry. There are many high profile and experienced editors and art directors who you can learn an awful lot from. The offices are centrally located in the west end of London which is great for transport links and shopping and socialising.

ConsThe management are constantly under pressure to cut costs and therefore budgets and staff as newstand magazines sales continue to fall. However rather than try and think of new and innovate ideas to reverse their fortunes they continue to bring in ex-editors and art directors to help relaunch failing titles.
Restructuring of departments into hubs creates an atmosphere where creatives and sub-editors work across numerous titles and have less ownership and pride over their magazines.

Advice to Senior ManagementConstantly degrading the quality of the magazines will of course lead to lower sales

Current Employee – been working at Bauer Consumer Media

ProsThere are no real consequences for your actions, so it doesn't matter if you reach target or not, they probably won't bin you.

ConsHighly political run by people who have been in the busines for years and years and have no idea of how things are done elsewhere. This makes them arrogant and narrow visioned.

Advice to Senior ManagementCompare Bauer to organisations other than EMAP to get a bench mark for standards & areas for improvement. Look at the broad base of companies within the UK to see sales standards and productivity management standards. The fact that something is new to Bauer does not make it unique or innovative.
