I have been working at Baxter full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Some bright people
Stable company if you can put up with the politics

    Cons

High turn over rate from plant manager to operators
Management does not care about your growth opportunities
People get promoted for wrong reasons

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop filling the positions with incapable people just because they are already with the company. Go outside of the company and get some good talent and shake things up.

I have been working at Baxter full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good community of people with an understanding of our mission to improve the lives of patients. Stimulating work. More team-oriented than my previous work places. Culture of continuous improvement influences more high-functioning. Many bright, intelligent co-workers to handle our sophisticated and delicate workload.

    Cons

Very stringent and restrictive bureaucracy. Too many activities based on fulfilling the bureaucracy than providing product-driven, results-oriented value. Lots of redundancy. Too much concern with covering one's own butt. Becoming overly preoccupied with insubstantial things like no overtime work and covering metrics than accomplishments. Culture of continuous improvement contributes to convoluted and self-contradicting bureaucracy. Marginal incentives. Some stagnant workforce that have difficulty doing things other than how they've always been done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Heed the advice of John Furey, Head of Global Operations, to develop problem-solving, results-oriented value than being mired in activity for the sake of activity.
Allow more flexibility for improvements in our systems to increase innovation and efficiency.

Management There is Very Scary and Clueless - Terrible Work-Life Balance!

I have been working at Baxter full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

You can get medical and dental benefits and some stock if you're over the senior manager level, otherwise not much else

    Cons

    - The company has really gone downhill over the past few years and has made some very bad choices in their senior management. I'm glad that I found another job elsewhere.
    - The annual pay increases are less than the annual the cost-of-living increases for this area.
    - Some of the departments work their employees extremely hard, making them have to do two or three employee' jobs without money to support re-hiring.
    - Senior management has a "Good Ole Boys" culture and there is very little ethnic and gender diversity at the senior levels.
    - Work-Life balance is terrible in this location and there is a lot of issues with the projects and programs not getting done on time.
    - The company has a bad reputation for continuing hiring and firing people for no reason but for saving money (at will state)
-Other healthcare companies in the area are more competitive with pay and have just the same if not better benefits.
    - The company management are very political and it is getting worse every year - a lot of backstabbing.
    - things are going to get worse after the company splits into two is there will be less money for this division with a lot of old products and little R&D or new innovation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The CEO needs to take a closer look at the people managing his sights and really understand how the employees are being treated in some departments. Everybody does not want to be working 6-7 days/week, 60+ hours/week, on fixing problems and remediation work all the time and there needs to be more investment in R&D and new innovation if the company is going to make it. The company also needs to invest in new technology and systems. It is amazing that a company this big has such antiquated technologies they are using. I just got another job offer and I am glad to be leaving here

I worked at Baxter full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Corporate culture, great coworkers and lots of camaraderie. Plenty of learning opportunities. Sense of mission to help the world. You get to work with coworkers around the world!

    Cons

Upper management seems to be disconnected from their employees. You are expected to work a lot of hours to meet your deadlines. Management never seems to hire additional help. The company will use you up and discard you (when you burn out). No sense of accountability among the employees. And some weird food served in the cafeteria.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of your offices and ask the employees what they think (not through a survey). Show appreciation to your employees. Give them recognition. People like to be rewarded for their hard work - a simple 'thank you' would do.

I have been working at Baxter full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Fantastic Work/Life balance if you don't insert yourself into demanding roles
    - Wonderful physical work environment - Northern Illinois facilities have credit unions, laundry service, fitness center, etc.
    - Tuition reimbursement programs - financial support and scheduling flexibility available for higher education options
    - Eventually, you'll find your niche - There is a plethora of opportunities at Baxter. There are a lot of internal shift/movement opportunities for those looking to try something new without leaving the business.
    - Community Outreach - Baxter does a lot for the local community and cultural institutions. Baxter employees benefit from the beautiful, healthy environment and are able to enjoy perks such as free admission to many museums and gardens.

    Cons

    - Occasionally feel like you're pushing a rope
    - Upper management does not always show appreciation for hard work
    - "Credit" for efforts often unjustly distributed

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be VERY helpful for the business entity to understand the manufacturing, R&D and technical abilities of the business. On occasion, unrealistic promises are made by the business that the technical teams are unable to deliver, likely due to disconnect between the 'say-ers' and the 'do-ers'.

I worked at Baxter full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Competitive salary and benefits, opportunities to move around internally, for the right person it can be a place where you spend your entire career, good people

    Cons

Very traditional, slow moving, lots of unnecessary bureaucracy, easy to get "stuck" doing the same thing forever, no formal management training in place

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement management training programs in order to attract and retain top management talent. Simplify overall management structure.
