I have been working at BlackBerry as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

At Blackberry, a lot of emphasis is placed on the coop program as everyone is friendly and willing to help you out. In addition, people really push you to succeed. Working on some of the latest innovation and seeing them brought to the market is definitely rewarding. There is also a good balance of work and play as there are many social events where you can interact with the other coop students. I have learned a lot and had lots of fun working at Blackberry.

    Cons

There were many times when needed to work long hours and sometimes over time to get the necessary work completed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More resources if possible placed towards improving company culture such as team building events.

I worked at BlackBerry full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

After all the purges, the people who are left are extremely talented and willing to embrace change to make BlackBerry succeed. It was a pleasure working with all of them and I have the feeling that I will not have the opportunity to work with such talented, intelligent people again; it truly seemed like a rare thing.

    Cons

People are anxious and burned out after 3 years of purges and there are no opportunities for advancement given the current climate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retain your talent and find ways to reward people so they stay.

    Company Environment

I have been working at BlackBerry as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Good company to work for in terms of gaining experience, and helpfulness. Benefits are generous and time off is granted when needed.

    Cons

Company is not financially stable, company could improve upon the training an employee receives when they first start their job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider giving interns more training for their designated position.

I worked at BlackBerry full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly, supportive environment. Open to ideas and enabling employees to learn new skills. Employees worked hard to make the company a success and continue to work hard to maintain market share.

    Cons

Emotionally challenging for employees to work through the long transformation process and stress of company downsizing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue supporting the cultural values of having an environment open to ideas and information sharing, coupled with quick decision making and execution skills.

I worked at BlackBerry full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

BlackBerry offered amazing opportunities to stretch your knowledge and experience base. The work life balance was terrific, and I could work from home when necessary.

    Cons

Management didn't consider employee contributions very carefully. Lots of politics that interfered with getting work done. Very stressful during massive layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are some amazing people working at BlackBerry. Invest in them, listen to their input, make them feel like they are important to the company's success - because they are. You can't afford to lose them, and there are lots of opportunities for them to work elsewhere.

Good people, good pay, lots of room for growth internally i.e. no one is holding you back. Work life balance is definitely possible.

    Cons

Hard times reflect in some people's morale. Head count reductions result in people being nervous and gloomy.

I worked at BlackBerry as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Very fun, relaxed culture. Everyone knows how to have a good time while getting their work done at the same time. Everyone is very helpful and dedicated to bring success to the company.

    Cons

Sometimes it is very quiet at BlackBerry. Most people are too caught up at work that sometimes you don't talk to a single person the entire day. You may be too busy coding all day.

I worked at BlackBerry full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great opportunities for those that are building a carrier and want to invest time and energy into an iconic Canadian company turn around. To be successful will require more than 100% of effort and problem solving skills.

    Cons

work life balance is limited with a BlackBerry tied to your hip. A very political company with great opportunities for those that can capture the nuances involved.

Good leadership - treading water on a personal level

Current Employee - Program Management in Ottawa, ON (Canada)
Current Employee - Program Management in Ottawa, ON (Canada)

I have been working at BlackBerry full-time

    Pros

Stabilizing portfolio - strong CEO and business unit head for software.
Salary remains ok. Work-life remains ok.

    Cons

No succession planning or leadership program - no growth path.
Remote executives make building up the necessary political capital for career growth yet another 2-3 year cycle in a series of reboots. Don't have the stamina to waste another few years being proactive and eager just to have the privilege of trying to be more valuable to the company in new ways.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time to identify top performers and do something. What is the point of great yearly reviews that come with clear requests for more, if it's always going to be more of the same.
