I worked at Brookdale Senior Living

    Pros

All of the pros left with Emeritus. There is a Brookdale on every corner just like McDonald's. It is a " cookie cutter " operation. Training is easy due to the fact that there is very little. Regulatory compliance is easy also, they make up the riles as they go along.

    Cons

The Cornerstones are not worth the paper they are printed on. Vacation and sick leave accrue but are difficult to use due to under staffing. There is not enough money available at most facilities for basic needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read your own associate handbook and follow your policy. Read your cornerstones and give them their due. Remember the residents and provide great care. Value your employees and treat them with respect.

I worked at Brookdale Senior Living

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits...the relationships with the residents are priceless.

    Cons

Hours cut after being there about a month due to low residence count. The rules changed every day., so you did not know from day to day what the rules were. A lot of back stabbing and gossip in the front office. Very disappointed in upper management. I was screamed and yelled at in front of residents by my immediate supervisor. The upper management did nothing but protect him....Many other employees have left because of this person. They also expect you to be there several days a week, but only few hours a day....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop covering up for a department supervisor that is a big liability to you.

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living

    Pros

Dynamic, flexible work hours, open to new ideas and many activities/therapy treatment ideas (in and/or out of the facility, as long as it is justifyable, functional, safety, and quality of life based)

    Cons

Frustrating, can feel micro-managed, depending on the leadership, relationships with facility administration varies on culture of the individual building (therapy dept. not employed by the individual building so not always a 'team' relationship). Very little $$ for treatment supplies and testing equipment (but depends on budget and need of individual clinics)

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

An enjoyable place to work. Staff AND residents truly care for another.

    Very rewarding work

Relationships made with residents and their families are priceless

    Cons

Prevents and discourages management from converting PRN employees to PT or FT due to cost concerns. Employee satisfaction and retention should trump this concern. Due to public scrutiny in the media recently, Brookdale will take steps to review employees' status and transition them if warranted, but this has been a known issue for years at the community level. The community cannot make a change until approved by corporate.

Work/Life Balance for on call employees is challenging.

No recognition for front line management.

    Pros

Pay. And that's if you can handle the stress and back stabbing that comes with working for Brookdale.

    Cons

Shady and secretive managers. Fire people who don't agree. Punishment for speaking up. Make changes to positions without involving the people who will actually be affected by the workflow

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

When I first started, there were a lot of great people who truly cared about our prospects and residents.

    Cons

Since Tricia Conahan joined the company as CMO, things have gone downhill. She has implemented "marketing campaigns" that have made no sense, and have clearly not brought any revenue into the company. She is also trying to steer away the focus from our residents to the money. The mission used to be "Worry about the people first, and the bottom line will take care of itself." This is no longer the case. We have law suit after law suit and our residents are leaving in droves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the people doing the actual work. Spend a day, or at least an hour, figuring out what we do, and focus your efforts on what works.

    Pros

The old staff and caring residents and their families

    Cons

Worst Executive Director in All of Georgetown Texas

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate Should have listened to the family members, to the staff, to the residents them selves on how bad the executive director was running the place, its sad to see so many loving staff that was there for so many years gone, so many residents that left all because of the selfishness and greed of the executive director and her boss and so forth and so on.
