    No work/life balance

311 Agent (Current Employee) Edmonton, AB (Canada)

    Pros-Good Pay
    -Near Transportation Hubs
    -Near Civic services
    -Near Festival and Event hubs

Cons- Employer does not adhere to schedule preferences
    -Seniority is Irrelevant
    - Crystal-ball schedule 'forecasting' results in understaffed busy days and overstaffed easy days
-Vacation Approvals occur days before the requested time. Going on any meaningful vacation is next to impossible.
-Management does not understand the job they are managing for.
-Management complicates what should be a very easy job with extra nonsense such as specific catch phrases and advertisements of other services often reserved for the private sector.
    - Stress caused by poor scheduling, restrictive vacation timeliness and disconnected management cause a gradual increase in absenteeism. In turn causing more stress for employees who maintain a consistent presence.

Advice to Senior ManagementSchedule forecasting is the same as fortune telling. Have a morning, day, evening, and night shift.
adhere to schedule preferences. It's easy to preach 'city values' when you go home at 5pm and get consistent vacation for running excel spreadsheets. You have human beings working for you. Treat them like it.

Great hours and coworkers, but poor managment

Survey Assistant II (Former Employee) Edmonton, AB (Canada)

ProsFantastic working hours and great working atmosphere with coworkers

ConsManagement issues - non-qualified individuals are in senior positions

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote qualified individuals, and not high school swim buddies.

Cronyism and Nepotism at the highest

Xxxxxxxxxxx (Current Employee) Edmonton, AB (Canada)

ProsSeems to have a safe atmosphere at least now things can change with screws getting tightened

ConsBelow average pay than industry standards. A good chunk goes for pension LAPP which is already running deficit of more than 4 billion dollars. There is no clear balance sheet about the health of the pension scheme which is the main motivational factor for many people joining the city.

Advice to Senior ManagementLeadership takes care of their own kind. Promotes people of their own choice nepotism and cronyism at the highest

Full of politics and micro management

    Fitness Monitor (Former Employee)

ProsThe city was very flexible with vacation and scheduling around University students schedule.

ConsLots of politics, treat employees poorly, kept as part time temp to avoid benefits.

Awesome place to work but can be really stressful when other people aren't doing their work.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe work hours can not be beat! Good benefits and very flexible.

ConsThere is a lot of politics, management doesn't get involved to help lower management deal with problem co-workers, the union and management always protects the useless lazy workers.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet involved and help lower management deal with problems around the office. A lot of times difficult co-workers won't listen to anybody till it comes from the head honcho.

    Stress Filled

Foreman (Current Employee) Edmonton, AB (Canada)

ProsBenifits for the family, pay chueqe never bounces, some of your co-workers turn into family and will always care for you and have your back

ConsFull of political nonsense, management looks out for management, the union looks out for management, HR looks out for management, full of drama if you don't buy the bosses coffee you are replaceable and expendable, the bosses have there favorites who get anything in the world, otherwise you are paid from the neck down

Advice to Senior ManagementRetire and let someone who cares take your place and fix things

Excellent benefits, some bitter people still on board

Systems Analyst I (Former Employee) Edmonton, AB (Canada)

ProsUnparalleled work life balance, and if you are motivated you will rise fast

ConsSince it's Union, there are a LOT of useless people still on board and that can be demotivating to work with

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
