Going downhill very fast and selling out hard working and committed employees

I worked at Community Health Plan of Washington full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

It was a great company at one time. Telecommuting and transportation subsidy.

    Cons

CHPW just sold their entire medical management team to Health Integrated. This has resulted in the previous 6% 401K match being reduced to 1% match for 67 dedicated and committed people. Prior to the transition, the employees were threatened by administration and the executive team that if they did not have a "good attitude" they would be terminated. This was a good company, now it is a very sick and unhealthy company! My advice would be to stay away from this sinking ship. This company no longer values their employees. I would suspect that within a year or so, it will be bought out/taken over by a larger "big fish" insurance company. Or the stakeholders including the clinics and board of directors, Healthcare Authority, Washington State Insurance Commissioner and NCQA will drive it out of business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you do not treat your hard working, long term committed employees well, then there is no doubt; you will not treat your health insurance members and patients any better. Example, if I ride up the elevator with the CEO once or twice a week for nearly three years and we exchange small chit-chat each time, we have established a working relationship. I basically want good for him and the company, as I am vested in this company and given them a portion of my life on this earth. Likewise, I thought he would want the same for those in his employ. That is not the case. Management is doing some very cagey and dishonest activities.

It really was a good company for a time.

....then something went wrong and they sold out their staff. Management should be ashamed of how they have treated their employees and their attempt to mislead staff into believing they have no option but to make the transition. Should anyone of these single mother employees decide they can not make the hour long extended commute to Lynnwood due to family and childcare obligations. Administration including Jane Daughenbaugh and CEO Lance has told the employees that they will not qualify for unemployment as CHPW will cite their unwillingness to transfer up north as insubordination and misconduct. Mr. Lance knows he is lying in this case and is deliberately misleading his former employees. He knows that a run on unemployment of nearly 30 - 40 people could be the very action that topples CHPW. So, he is blatantly lying to his previous hard working and committed employees. Unless, they have a significant change in management, it is only a matter of time until the great CHPW company that was.........falls.

I have been working at Community Health Plan of Washington full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good work/life balance and benefits. Compensation is mid-range, higher than some places, lower than others. People are nice. A good stopping place on your way to someplace else.

    Cons

No real leadership. Decisions are made by committee to avoid individual accountability. Increased competition in the Medicaid marketplace is turning this into a serious liability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would give you advice, but I don't think you are capable of change.

I have been working at Community Health Plan of Washington full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Benefits are average, transportation subsidy makes it easier for staff who are not provided parking to commute to work.

    Cons

There are no leaders amongst the executive team in this organization. All of the executives care more about their own corporate turf then about either the stated mission, or customer experience. The executives in charge of operations are particularly notorious for not wanting to address the real operational problems that exist; both have a long history with other health plans where their reputation was also reflective of their incompetence. Proof of this is in their downgraded NCQA rating which can be viewed online. The original NCQA effort was done to get it done; not to improve quality for customers. This approach to business does not work in the long term.

The lack of planning for major projects like a new payroll/time keeping system and new employee benefits result in ongoing problems and glitches that could have been mitigated with appropriate project management and planning.

This community-based health plan should have the most comprehensive and cost-effective option on the new Washington Health Plan exchange but they do not.

Staff turnover is extraordinarily high, and for good reason. Once hired, it is pretty clear this organization is chaotic and mismanaged.

Mid-level managers struggle daily under the weight of their incompetent executive leadership team.

Salaries are less than average which they justify by their not-for-profit, mission-oriented corporate culture.

The CEO is blind-by-design to what is going around him; he refuses to engage with anyone below his executive team who are all doing an excellent job of hiding the real operational problems in this organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This organization needs a clean sweep from the CEO down through each Director. Hire leaders who have demonstrated success in changing stagnant and dying corporations.

    Pros

Paycheck? But not an overly large one. Decent benefits.

    Cons

Poor senior leadership, poor mid level management, no long term plan or strategic direction. Fiscal mismanagement. Very poor communication. Secrecy. Snap decisions. Chaos reigns. Just don't go there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you know how, show some leadership ability. Do some long term planning. Get some leadership training. Change your business model to one that will actually allow you to control your operation and generate profit, instead of letting the board and the CHC's eat your lunch.

I worked at Community Health Plan of Washington full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great people to work with, health benefits are average. Tuition reimbursement for employees a descent benefit. Transportation benefit an added plus for employees.Current CEO a great addition to the company.

    Cons

Customer Service department is not appreciated fully for what they are required to endure on a daily basis. The pay is on the low end fo experienced c.s. HR not always sure about certain benefit applications. Antiquated phone system.Understaffed IT dept. HIGH Turnover should speak volumes about the company. CEO's ideas do not trickle down to customer service in any meaningful way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Update phone system to the 21st century requirements, Add qualified IT staff, EDUCATE HR re:EMPLOYEE BENEFITS, Demonstrate to the Customer Service Department that you truly appreciate their efforts by implementing meaningful updates. Stop telling the c.s. dept. how hard their job is and help seek solutions to improve morale and ways of conducting business

I worked at Community Health Plan of Washington full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

CHPW provides a vital service to the community. There are so many people here who care about the mission and values, but, as in many places, the lower on the food chain the less your opinions and ideas count.

    Cons

With the exception of a few token (not saying undeserved) hires, management is pretty "homogenous." Very uneven treatment of non-management employees. Large talent drain in the past 24 months, and the bad stuff definitely rolls downhill here. Shame.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

REALLY follow through on your values statement and make *everyone* count. You have plenty of smart, passionate, and dedicated people on the front lines who are vastly underutilized and even discounted. Also, this is a company that serves a large racial minority community, yet the makeup of your workforce indicates that your principles that drive the treatment of members don't extend to employees.
