Good company - too many people not doing much..

Condultant (Former Employee)
Sydney

I worked at Dell as a contractor for more than a year

ProsGreat company to work for - they spend a lot of money on you - parties etc are very good. Management could be good or bad but mostly, a good company with great atmosphere.

ConsThere are too many people (or were when I was there) that dont anything - hard to tell what exactly they do. Even when you ask these guys that question - they seem to be lost, can't explain what exactly they do...

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to get rid of these people who are not required and promote people who are doing a good job.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

A great place to build your experience and profile in the Industry

Inside-Sales Representative (Former Employee)
Sydney

I worked at Dell full-time for more than 5 years

ProsVery structured process and procedures which supported the sales floor.
Management were generally very approachable
Opportunities within the organisation to cross into other roles

ConsVery very metrics focussed with daily KPI's on sales numbers and talk time.
Too focussed on the weekly number and commitments up the chain to management vs building long term customer relationships.
Eventually too many hoops and lines of business gates to jump through to reach target
Target increases were double and triple digit figures quarter on quarter

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn how to retain your talent
Opex is way too low and hardware reps are being made to pay for a services business that is not performing.

Still the place to be in for supply-chain and Logistics

Director (Current Employee)
Sydney

I have been working at Dell full-time for more than 10 years

ProsDell's segmented supply chain model all the way from order management to how products are delivered is still industry leading.

ConsWe need to be more confident with our products and invest more in marketing. The streak model is a good example of how we were well ahead of the market but dropped it mid-way but companies like Samsung manage to completely capitalize on that form factor.

Advice to Senior ManagementLets bring back Brand Dell - We cannot afford to lose this. We still have everything it takes.

Nice experience at Dell

Marketing Consultant (Former Employee)
Fairfax, VA (US)

I worked at Dell full-time for more than 3 years

ProsSmart, dedicated, passionate about Dell's technologies people. Good pay. Great end-to-end tech strategies.

ConsPerhaps too many executives in TX - I think they lose a little of the sense of what is going on in the rest of the US.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't make execs so dependent on living in Round Rock.

Dell, a fairly good company

Senior Operations Engineering (Former Employee)
Austin, TX (US)

I worked at Dell full-time for more than a year

ProsA good company to work for - coworkers seem to get along.
the day to day was enjoyable
if not directly involved with customers dress was casual which a lot of folks (workers) liked

Consa lot of layoffs - and then rehire.
moved a lot of operations overseas

Advice to Senior Managementtry to be a bit more patriotic with 'Made in America' but, I know, business is business and you must be competitive. (Michael, you got rid of all your US factories - did your business folks ever add up ALL the costs of doing business overseas?) Yup, Wall street rules!
