    Pros

This company is incredible--their culture is casual and friendly, the employees are young and talented, and their creativity and innovation is through the roof.

    Cons

It's difficult to "move up" the chain--- openings really only occur when someone leaves the teams... tough to get your foot in the door, but once you're in, they treat you exceptionally well.

I worked at Discovery Communications as an intern

    Pros

Great hands-on experience, incredible intern activities and networking opportunities, great intern managers, fun company culture, great work environment, great company

    Cons

The company advertises the ability of interns to land full-time job opportunities, but that's not the case for a majority of interns. While there are definitely previous interns who now work at the company, it depends what's open.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great culture. Great benefits.

    Cons

Turnover is high and the restructuring of departments and management causes a very unsettling feeling in employees. Not enough time off for the quantity of work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please consider less work so a 8-9 hour day is the norm, instead of 10-12. More vacation time should we awarded to those who consistently work long days. Over taxing staff causes burnout and mistakes.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    - For a large company there is still an embrace of individuality that exists within Discovery
    - Work life balance depends on your manager (mine at the moment rocks!)
    - Pay is on the upper side of the scale
    - Perks and benefits are some of the strongest in the industry with good time off, sick, 401K, and medical
    - Strong telework opportunities
    - Opportunity to work with incredibly motivated, smart, engaged people
    - Easy access from Metro, MARC, and other public transport plus employee parking in the building
    - Lots of great nearby restaurants within easy walking distance (a 1 hour lunch actually feels like a 1 hour lunch)

    Cons

    - There are politics - what company doesn't have them.
    - Innovations started in one area will be quashed in another
    - Little synergy between the different groups
    - The quality of the manager / director that you get can be a crap shoot - some are good at what they do but their interpersonal skills are non-existent.
    - In some areas of Silver Spring you can definitely feel a sense of despair (counter to the energy you see in other places)
    - Some of their policies and practices lag behind the times

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Remember what made Discovery great and get back to that
    - Value and support your employees, without them, you have no product, no content, nothing to sell to your customers and viewers
    - Value and support your viewers by offering them quality, engaging, and compelling content

I worked at Discovery Communications full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I found the company provides managers a lot of tools to support employee development, and encourages employees to use a solid infrastructure of benefits, including on site medical care. I appreciated the opportunity to work with the slate of experienced professionals who provide corporate services like HR, Finance and Legal.

    Cons

Satellite offices do not have all of the same perks as headquarters, and headquarters is populated with people who therefore feel more "privileged" and look down on those employees who work outside of Silver Spring.

Within the digital media team, there is an enormous amount of churn, and the reasons are many but include 1) a lack of interest in investing in hiring full time talent and a focus on outside consultants and outsourcing development 2) a weak ad sales team that can't meet forecasts which create endless budget cuts and 3) a senior leadership team that focuses more on politics than on team development and management.

What team you belong to matters, sometimes more than your actual contribution, when it comes to moving up in the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand the causes of employee churn, and fix the root of that problem.
