I have been working at Duke University as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

The people here are really great, they care about the school and work together to make it a better place. Great hours and their break room is stocked with a great coffee selection.

    Cons

The pay is a little low, but understandable as it's a nonprofit institution. There was sometimes too much red tape in the way of getting things done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire less summer interns, but pay each one a higher hourly reate.

I have been working at Duke University full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Professional development, collaborative culture, family friendly polices. Wonderful being around motivated and engaged students. Love having the opportunity to attend talks from subject matter experts around the world. I appreciate how the University supports the Durham community.

    Cons

Some colleagues are lower performers and still are rewarded with keeping their jobs. Some top performers are overlooked and brown nosers are rewarded.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think the leadership really tries to keep improving the organization.

I have been working at Duke University full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good benefit options and solid resources, such as Duke's collection of libraries.

Duke has a great postdoctoral association that organizes events---both professional and social. The association is the biggest and most helpful service the university provides to me.

    Cons

The postdoctoral experience is highly dependent on your supervisor.

I have been working at Duke University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Durham is cheap, allowing you to live comfortably with you grad stipend. Professors are generally helpful

    Cons

The area may be unsafe. Thus, a car is pretty much a necessity since people tend to live far away from the campus. But if you mostly spend time at school then it's not such a big problem

I have been working at Duke University part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Easy to reach out to a professor and ask whether he/she needs a research assistant - most professors are currently conducting research. Great opportunity to work with experienced, well-respected professors. Good first job to put on your resume.

    Cons

Whether the work is interesting depends on the needs of the professor - at times, work may be data entry. Salary depends on whether the professor has grant money for research.
