I have been working at Eastman Chemical full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

So many opportunites and training are available to employees for career development and personal growth. Many health and recreational programs are provided to employees and their families. I feel it is definitely the BEST place to work in the area...maybe anywhere!!

    Cons

Sometimes the size of the company makes it difficult to keep up with everyone although the company does a great job with the many sites of info on our intranet website.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Deal with problems of poor performing lower management and do not let them destroy morale and work efficiency due to their poor self-image and lack of knowledge and their acting like a boss instead of a leader.

    Cons

Sometimes Eastman is perceived old school but I believe we are changing that.

Eastman Chemical is a strong company that is focused on future growth. It is a great company to work for and has a very competitive compensation plan.

I have been working at Eastman Chemical full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Eastman does a very good job providing training opprotunities to young employees. They also have a mentorship program which pairs you with a full time employee to learn from your first year. Compensation seems to be above average for entry level engineers. Benefits are also good as well as the work to life balance.

    Cons

Lots of new focus on performance driven culture. This creates tension within the ranks since you are competeing against your coworkers for raises and bonuses. The way you are rated in performance reviews seems arbritary and is not on set principles. It is completely up to your supervisor to give you whatever rating he feels your earned and doesn't necessarily always seem tied to your actual performance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the performance rating system. It is going to kill the great culture of friendliness and helpfullness that exist right now.

I have been working at Eastman Chemical full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Eastman has worked hard to foster an inclusive environment for their employees. There is a strong emphasis on team work, but the individual is not forgotten in the process. There are numerous opportunities for training, growth and advancement without giving up your family in the process.

    Cons

As with a lot of big companies, there does seem to be some duplication of recordkeeping activities and paperwork that can be frustrating. However, this is gaining some recognition at higher levels and it appears that some efforts may be underway to address some of the duplication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please be careful when pushing for a more competitive work force. Competitiveness, when not properly managed, can breed cut throat behavior and will drive people away from productive teamwork.

I have been working at Eastman Chemical full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive salary and decent benefits. Stable company with a lot of opportunity for moving around. The people are great. Lots of opportunity for training.

Great work/life balance depending on your job and the four 9's and a 4 work schedule is nice.

    Cons

Eastman used to promote people and move people around faster, but now both of these processes can be slow. Despite record breaking performance, promotions and bonuses are mediocre. The salaray is attractive, but when you look at overall compensation, it does not look as great. They have recently changed the ranking system, which is leading the culture away from the collaborative, teamwork environment to more of a competitive environment.

Although there are a lot of job opportunities within Eastman, management seems to make decisions for you on where you get moved, rather than talking to you about where you want to move.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make more of an effort to talk with employees about their career interests/paths. Consider allowing telecommuting as a part of the work schedule. Do a better job of rewarding employees for good performance.

I have been working at Eastman Chemical full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The work / life balance is hard to beat. The variety of job opportunities is extensivefor one company. Pay is quite good relative to the cost of living. The local school system is strong and accomplished

    Cons

There isn't much ethnic, religious or political, diversity in the region and that is largely reflected in the population of Eastman employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the Relative Performance Assessment (Force Ranking) program. It is divisive, accomplishes little, and consumes a lot of management's time. No other program at Eastman is scorned by so many. I have yet to meet a single employee that thinks it is a good idea. It damages employee morale far more than it benefits productivity.

    Pros

Eastman is a highly diverse company with endless opportunities. Salary is competitive. Work load is both reasonable and enjoyable. Management here is great and colleagues are people that I want to hang out with.

    Cons

Not looking forward to a high deductible health care plan but I guess that is what everybody is going to eventually.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work guys and gals. It is exciting to work for a company that is growing. I like working for management that makes itself visible.
