Pros

Flexible roles that you can tailor to interests, entrepreneurial, decent pay, motivated and engaged colleagues, plenty of support, outstanding coaching model

Cons

Expectations for time spent working are high and sometimes unrealistic. To be successful, you will need to sacrifice some work-life balance.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The biggest piece of advice to management is to try to operate in a similar manner from year to year. Drastic changes make the job even less sustainable.

    Pros

Actually play a part in improving education for young people.

    Cons

No work-life balance, and if you try you are penalized.
    Management
People do not say "hello" or acknowledge you

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management was the problem in my experience. I think in the drive to see the company grow, they forget to foster the staff as individuals.

    Not for the experienced teacher

    Pros

Clear and progressive model for teacher evaluation, small class sizes, adequate resources, stong data systems, lot of professional development.

    Cons

Never ending demands with little regard for personal obligations, high turnover of staff due to burnout and dissatisfaction, unclear job expectations, exclusive literacy focus leaves other subjects neglected, unyielding carrot and stick discipline system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create an environment that encourages teachers to be thoughtful practicioners rather than carry out scripts created by someone else. Put teachers in leadership positions who have proven track records of success rather than those who will jump through hoops but still need to do a lot of work in their classroom (or who do not work in the classroom at all). Be more clear about your job expectations and give people less to do with a higher emphasis on quality and follow through.
