I have been working at Applied Materials full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

+ Over 10,000 patents; industry leader.
+ brilliant colleagues; very global
+ strong innovation & customer-focused culture
+ great use of technology in all aspects of the company including the supporting functions
+ base and total comp are good
+ over the past 2 years there has been increased focus on leadership values and management development

Cons

- Demanding environment
- must be prepared to work hard; long hours
- shutdowns are used to meet financial targets and employees are not always given adequate notice

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shutdowns should not be used to meet financial targets. Must plan/forecast better to allow employees time to plan vacations as well.

I worked at Applied Materials full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

-Balanced quality of life if you're in the right group
    -opportunity for advancement
-many educational and mentorship opportunities - good training, and development
-generally, coworkers are pleasant to nice
    -easy to succeed

    Cons

-Ongoing layoffs since 2002 leads to lots of politics, and lots of CMA-type work, rather than focusing on results, in anything above management level.
-generally poorly paying for the bay area with no to little relocation cost of living adjustment, and very little year-to-year adjustment even for top performers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wiser aquisitions, improve data-based decision making with company-standard enterprise class BI / Analytics tools, improve compensation

I worked at Applied Materials full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Well-seasoned Engineering teams. Good benefits. Lots of skilled employees. Ability to influence technical solutions. In the past - lots of training to improve skills in all fields.

    Cons

Hidden decisions. Frequent and unjustified lay offs. Outsourcing the most valuable developments to India and Russia. No loyalty to old-time folks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Evaluate the results of unsuccessful outsourcing. Retain all talented and the most professional workforce in US. Re-hire all experts to restore Company's culture of 80-th and 90-th.
