    Former Employee - Enterprise Architect in Singapore (Singapore)

    I worked at Computer Sciences Corp as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

    A relatively reasonable remuneration package for monthly basis, as well as some minor medical benefits (a claims card is issued and can be used at certain clinics) make work quite tolerable.

    Cons

    (This is applicable in the context of Singapore, and may not apply to overseas or other branch).

    Due to the unusual nature of the organization of work, most CSC staff hired do not actually work in CSC premises or base offices. Instead, contract and project-based positions are offered. This indicates a strong, distinct disparity between managers and employees, thus indicating lack of communication between management and workers.

    At CSC, turnover rates are incredibly high. Shady HR policies, overtly-bureaucractic management and excessively-rigid terms-and-conditions (T&Cs) punish their hires unnecessarily when workplace conflicts occur. Conflicts occurred are always attributed to abusive clients instead of incompetent hires.

    * Shady HR policies:
    1. Gender preferential treatment is also prominent: female hires are usually converted to full-time staff at CSC's clients, and male hires are usually fired right off or have their contracts terminated prior to full-period stipulated in their original contracts.

    2. Most of the jobs are suitably targeted for retired individuals and experienced senior citizens. However, CSC is targeting such jobs to fresh graduates, and due to job requirements being consistently mismatched, a lot of careers for such fresh grads are destroyed because of such poor HR hiring practices.

    Overtly-bureaucractic management:
    1. Speaking of job requirement mismatch, CSC often liaises with local government corporations, for example the defence science department known as DSTA. Many job postings of CSC related to such clients are always erroneous, citing job positions that are not recognized in the specific industry they are targeting to, as well as providing dubious job descriptions and roles/responsibilities that are completely irrelevant to the work provided. For instance, a CSC-hired Software Engineer is required to perform secretariat work and on the actual job, performs zero coding/programming, and is required to perform work that requires research from outside sources via Internet. But because of existent restrictions that Internet and wi-fi access cannot be allowed at such (client) premises, this makes the job role completely redundant, thus ensuring that no reasonable amount of work can be done, apart from guess-work based on poorly-written notes-of-meeting and condescending, angry emails from unreasonable managers.

    Excessively-rigid terms-and-conditions (T&Cs):
    1. Elaborating on the point of client/CSC relationships, the reason why CSC is able to maintain relationships with their clients is due to CSC consistently favouring their clients' workplace ethics and policies. Meaning, that given the client starts to be abusive to the CSC hires, CSC itself would not protect their employees, and assume good faith on their clients for being "always in the right". As such, CSC hires when faced with issue cannot turn or negotiate with either their CSC masters or the client that CSC asked them to work in to reach peaceful resolutions, thus causing bitter resentment among CSC hires.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Learn to speak with the clients properly on what requirements are to be exacted for each project instead of using a "standard job template". Wrong hires are not doing this company any favors.
