    I worked at Edelman

    Pros

    Edelman's training program is first-rate. There are online trainings and in-person workshops for all employees, and more rigorous training offerings for managers. Like anywhere else, if you are lucky enough to have a good manager, they will protect you and give you a good chance to thrive in your role. If you wind up with a client you're excited about, the work has the potential make you feel inspired and fulfilled.

    Cons

    The positive reviews on this Web site are so rosy, it makes this former employee wonder whether Edelman mounted a campaign to whitewash its GlassDoor profile.

    For a company that purports to be at the cutting edge of business communication, the actual staffing model is completely inadequate. Edelman is the stingiest company I've ever worked for, paying low salaries for work that is highly valued elsewhere. Any employee who leaves is likely to discover this almost immediately. Not even the first-rate training program makes up for that.

    Moreover, Edelman's top management is constantly squeezing more work particularly from junior staff, and tightening the screw further every quarter. In an effort to be as profitable as possible, most accounts lean heavily on junior people with only the token involvement of senior staff. It's common for the average foot-soldier within Edelman to be working on 4-6 accounts. It is not an environment conducive to high-quality work, rather it encourages middling work and is a surefire way to burn out staff and cause heavy turnover, which is exactly what happens. The junior staff bear the brunt of the belt-tightening but never benefit from it, as they usually burn out and leave long before they become a Vice President or above, the only positions eligible for the company's bonus program.

    Teams are not truly multi-disciplinary, because it would be more expensive to staff teams that way. There is an over-emphasis on traditional media relations skills, insufficient screening for basic writing skills, and no training whatsoever in graphic design or video production. The only exception is social media skills, which Edelman has attempted to diffuse throughout the organization with a unique training program. Unfortunately even the most embarrassingly basic social media programs are priced too high to be useful to most clients. The result is that for all but the major accounts, the company's services can seem a bit limited and behind the times.

    The culture at Edelman is uneven, with scattered safe havens and many hornets' nests. People who thrive in a highly politicized environment will move up quickly, regardless of their actual talent. You could spend years climbing this ladder, or just leave and move up much more quickly elsewhere.

    My advice to prospective employees: if the job appeals to you, if you really click with the interview team and if you can confirm that these will be the people you will be working with, it could be a good situation. Then stay long enough to learn the ropes and form some good relationships. But don't stay too long, because you are sure to be valued more elsewhere in the end.
