Pros

Rapid growth. Work alongside a diverse group of very bright people. Free information sharing and collaboration. Plenty of scientific disciplines to gain exposure to. Somewhat uncompetitive pay but very solid benefits package. They will hold all-hands meetings to recognize your hard work.

Cons

Senior leadership overconfident in their expertise, thus making massive routine technical blunders. You will work stretches of overtime for months (perhaps indefinitely) compensating for their gaffes. You will live there and rarely see your family, but hey, free dinner!

Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you don't truly know how something works, get off your Ph.D. and leverage other talent that does.

    Pros

ITT Exelis Geospatial Systems (GS) makes extraordinary hardware for satellites and UAVs.

    Cons

    Wow,...where do I start?

Lacks leadership and a moral compass, this has been exacerbated by the downturn in the economy and the looming federal budget cuts.

Additionally, the firm has been undergoing an internal reorganization for about a year. The senior leadership has abdicated the re-engineering of the firm to a consultant who lacks real business experience and is not including marketing or analysis of the competition into the foundation of the reorganization.

Through the reorganization the firm is restructuring, but is doing so in a totalitarian and top down fashion. Employees are not given the opportunity to apply for new positions in the emerging organizational structure, but are essentially told here is your new job description,....now accept it or turn in your badge.

The above, combined with a near total lack of loyalty down the leadership chain, extremely poor internal communications and failure to ensure employees are valued has resulted in abysmal morale. Overlay onto that the lack of new business prospects has driven many of the most qualified and I would say valuable employees to get their resumes on the street.

A mass exodus is underway to exit this sinking ship.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I am not sure if ITT Exelis Geospatial Systems can be saved. It would require a total replacement of the present "leadership" with real business people with outstanding leadership and business savvy. The present leadership consists largely of people that were no doubt stellar engineers and PMs,....but unfortunately should have less of a leadership role in running a business.
