I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time for more than 8 years

Pros

Good discount, a lot of flexibility with schedule if you have a good manager

Cons

After 10 years with the company I learned that it is all about your store manager. If you have a good manager, they do their best to shield their associates from the idiocy coming from the corporate offices. They also had a wage freeze in effect for about 3 years when I quit.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make smarter decisions, pay your people, and don't blame the little guys for the big guys mistakes. You can't cut labor back to nothing and still have everything get done.

Great entry level, awful long term

I have been working at Hastings Entertainment part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The products I work with are relevant to my interests, and there is a huge spread of products. The employee discount is mostly what keeps the part time employees around, and it's generally a pretty friendly atmosphere. At the store level, management has been great; friendly, flexible and hard working.

    Cons

The current district manager is so abrasive that all department managers stepped down or left completely, (those that stayed are still expected to do managerial duties, but are not paid for it) with the store management also considering finding another job. At the corporate level, this company has its head on backwards and is thus headed for the grave.
Additionally, the pay is awful compared to similar places. You are started at minimum wage and (as long as there isn't a pay freeze in effect, like the first two years) have the oppertunity for a 6 cent raise every year. Management is paid what comes out to less than 40c an hour more than a new hire, with far more responsibility and blame laid on them then it's worth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop demanding ever-increasing profits, memberships, rentals, sales, etc. There is such thing as market saturation.

I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Flexible with schedule for school. Fun overall atmosphere with co-works. Great book and merchandise discount. Great selection of merchandise.

    Cons

Wage freeze 3 years, non-noncompetitive pay, no employee recognition. Hard to move up in the organization. Unfulfilled promises in compensation. Corporate office lives in its own little world there is no viable medium to give advice, comments or concerns. Upper management have a superiority complex and are demeaning to full time and part associates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-think your hiring and promotion criteria. Store and district level management have too much a boys club mentality.
