Former Employee - Revenue Officer in Akron, OH (US)

I worked at IRS full-time for more than a year

Pros

Stable employment with full range of benefits, belonged to union so breaks, hours, etc pre-determined. I had not worked under such an arrangement.

Cons

Some delinquent taxpayers threatening, required to work in post of duty outside residence, assigned territory even farther away than POD so lots of time in car. Job just not a good fit with my personality.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

My manager was fine, career person within IRS

I worked at IRS as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of overtime during April, Night Differential for 630p-230a shift, casual atmosphere, no dress code, ability to listen to music / podcasts while working all night.

    Cons

Despite having the best stats, was passed up from going from seasonal to full time. Much deference given to people having been there longer and not who was doing the best work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give people full time jobs based on merit and not length of time with the company, and I would have stayed much longer.

Current Employee - Supervisory Internal Revenue Agent in Lanham, MD (US)

I have been working at IRS full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Interesting Work;flexible hours; good salary; ability to move around;great people;fitness center at most locations; training when available; supportive colleagues

    Cons

lack of leadership; micro management;inconsisent with technology;inconsistent human relations with employees; cliche driven "do more with less"; no rewards;little chance to travel;cannot reward employees for jobs well done; expect employees to carry the ball while execs watch

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

talk to the people who actually have to do the tasks you think will modernize the agency; stop cowtowing to politicans and outside entities who are clueless. Think about what you ask us to do and if there is a ROI
