I have been working at MITRE full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    * Helping the sponsor is rewarding on a personal level
    * Good for your career when you leave MITRE - a 3 year MITRE stint on your resume looks good to other companies
    * Variety of work available is great - you can choose other projects to work on within the company
    * Benefits are good
    * Flexible work schedule promotes good work-life balance
    * You meet many, many smart people

    Cons

    * You meet many, many smart people who think they're smarter than everyone else
    * The strange mix in management - which is, many managers who are politically motivated - actually serves to tamp down the talent of many employees and they become afraid to make decisions that could be controversial
    * The office politics are excessive
    * Be careful what degree you have - if you do not have a public policy or a tech degree, you will feel your opinion is far less valuable to management
    * There's a distinct lack of thought diversity in MITRE and sometimes the solutions are like stagnant water

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1) Increase your thought diversity - not women vs. men and age only. Bringing in young talent with the same educational background and the same teachers and are now being mentored by the same old guys isn't going to shake up your teams - actively seek people who would make everyone else go, what? Why is THAT person there? See what happens.
    2) Full management reviews, completely anonymous, to help weed out the managers that are not helping your company at all. This is difficult to do - management reviews that are conducted within MITRE never feel anonymous.
    3) When you find someone that's poisoning the well, move them laterally so they're not in management. It's really hard to get people out of management at MITRE, but when it needs to happen it needs to be enabled to happen.
    4) Provide leadership coaching to your next generation of leaders that is equal to the coaching you provide to the existing leaders.
    5) Make employees feel safe sharing this information at MITRE itself. Find a forum for them to speak out.

I have been working at MITRE full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    1. Critically important work for the country
    2. Complex work that keeps employees challenged in a positive way
    3. Strong technical skills and capabilities
    4. Cooperative and supportive work environment
    5. Family-friendly environment w.r.t. flexible work hours

    Cons

    1. Limited promotion opportunities
    2. As it has grown in size, MITRE has not evolved its operating norms accordingly (slow to change)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More focus on and engagement with customer senior executives is needed to ensure MITRE is doing the most important work for the customer and that it is appropriate FFRDC work.
