Company Pays Well, but Management Personnel often have no backgrounds in the departments they manage

Pros

Company pays extremely well. Company is involved in the community. Company does not play games with employees' salaries.

Cons

Management moves from department to department, seemingly at will. Employees below "management" are locked in their positions "for life" quite often, and often must train new managers (within their own departments) as the managers come and go. There are people at this company in management who cannot manage people well, like any company, but instead of being let go, they either get moved or are often promoted. Company is far behind in technology despite stock prices being high. Unbelievable legal / paperwork beauracracy and processes get in the way of day-to-day business. For example, their lawyers must review all vendor and project quotes, taking months and months (while project deadlines are "static").

You will work 24x7, 365 days yearly (on-call, upgrades, and so on), depending on the department in which you work.

Horrendous management in some areas. I can understand not all engineers make great managers and vice versa, but people cannot speak intelligently about technology which they don't understand nor effectively manage their staff while being trained by them. If MasterCard ran a hospital's ER, they would move security or purchasing personnel into Emergency Room management positions, all the while attempting to effectively manage nurses, doctors, and surgical procedures (until the lawsuits and/or deaths resulted).

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please stop "locking" people within departments. Do not reward "top performers" (who've received "exceeds" ratings and higher in their reviews) by never letting them move. You will lose these great employees (wink-wink) eventually as they will tire of training new manager after manager.

I have been working at MasterCard (more than 10 years)

    Pros

MasterCard goes all out to get the programs the customers want. Funding is sometimes tight, but your team finds a way to make it happen. I am proud to work for MasterCard.

    Cons

Timeframes can be grueling, some mangement have unrealistic expectations due to lack of detailed knowledge, but that is everywhere. Work some weekends, but not many.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is still a lot of dead weight with some management, somehow they get by b/c they inherited a good team. Overall, it's hurting progress.
