Former Employee - Program Manager Intern in Redmond, WA (US)
Former Employee - Program Manager Intern in Redmond, WA (US)

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than a year)

Pros

Pay, great gifts (Samsung series 9 ultra book), exciting and real work, individual office!, intern speaker series with Steve Ballmer and VPs, amazing events with private concerts (Young the Giant, Alabama Shakes), the list goes on.
This was by far the best internship experience I've had. I felt that I made a difference and learned plenty along the way. Even if you don't see yourself going to Microsoft full time, this is still an amazing internship opportunity!

Cons

About 1500 interns so you can't meet everyone.
Redmond is boring, but it's only a 25 minute drive to Seattle in no traffic.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great job with the intern program.

I worked at Microsoft full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It is a great place to work because you get exposure to new technologies and you get trainings all the time. It is also a great opportunity to work with virtual teams and people from all over the world. And the corporate culture is good, the people you get to meet are great and I have made very good friends all over the world while working for Microsoft.

    Cons

Most jobs within Microsoft mean too much work and stress, which has serious effects on work/life balance, although they struggle to improve that. In most cases, there is no such thing as leaving the work in the office - you take it with you everywhere... Another thing i didn't appreciate was how one bad manager can ruin entire teams and make the good people leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention and take more care of the people who work for you at all levels, otherwise the good people will have alternatives and will not wait around for things to get better.
